The truth behind this is EU was trying to use the GSP+ as a tool to manipulate SL and stop the war against the LTTE. But since GOSL was firm in not allowing EU to do an investigation internally, EU had to take back thir step and had to say that they are going ahead of the investigation externally.
This shows if GOSL stands up to the pressure these international mootans cannot do as they growl.. |

Dec 02, 2008 (LBO) Trade concessions from the European Union has been extended till about the middle of next year until a probe on Sri Lanka's eligibility is completed an official said.
International Trade Secretary S. Ranugge said the EU had informed the government of the decision.
The EU has warned earlier that concessions granted under the Generalized System of Preferences plus (GSP+) by may not be extended over human rights concerns.
Sri Lanka has to comply international protocols on civil and political rights to qualify for the trade benefits.
The EU probe is on human rights abuse and the use of child soldiers.

Normally the Probe will extend for one year ! Considering that GOSL is infact very racist, only min of 6 months is needed !
GSP+ not extended, will remain until probe concludes - EU
The EU clarified today that the GSP+ concession has not been extended, but will automatically remain until the conclusion of the ongoing probe.

| There were no automatically remain until probe finish talk in the begining. In the begining, what they said was, the deadline is dec. 31 and they will discontinue after that. Since SL stood firm and said, 'if you give you give, if not, go ahead and discontinue, but we are not gonna play by urrules..', these EU guys had to bite their initial growling and now they say automatically extended.. |
