Army deserters flee Panagoda camp
A joint search operation was underway to capture three army deserters, who escaped from the Panagoda army detention centre late on Saturday night, army sources said yesterday.
Military Spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said initially seven deserters, who were arrested and under detention at the centre within the Panagoda army complex, had attempted to escape from the centre.
However, troops at the security points managed to capture four of them after firing in the air. Three other persons however managed to escape
total of 2,984 soldiers and 21 officers who refused to report back were arrested for deserting their ranks and were to face the Court Martial
