Kokavil liberated another LTTE bastion on A-9 falls

Monday, 1 December 2008 - 8:59 AM SL Time

Troops of Sri Lanka Army 57 division today (Dec 1) reached long awaited milestone on their march into terrorist dens in Wanni with the liberation of the Kokavil town.

According to the battlefield sources, troops launched an offensive early last morning extending their forward boundaries towards east of the A-9 (Jaffna-Kandy) road. Infantrymen of the 57 division first reached the A-9 at a location few kilometers north of the Kokavil town and then turned the thrust southwards destroying all remaining LTTE strongholds down to Mankulam.

This is the first time after 28 years Army gained full control over this area, the sources added. More information will follow

Troops on Kokavil outskirts recall memories
Army Troops, now on the outskirts of much-spoken Kokavil, to the south of Kilinochchi bordering the parallel A-9 Highway and old Murikandi-Kokavil Railway Station recall cherished memories of their fallen War Heroes in the 1990s with honour, admiration and valour and LTTE massacre on 'Yal Devi 'passenger train.

Photos in this story taken on Monday (29) show vandalized ruins of the Murikandi-Kokavil railway station platform with all its roof-sheets, iron rail tracks, and almost everything, belonging to the railway station after those items were either damaged or removed and finally taken away by jungle- based Tiger terrorists, to be used for their criminal acts.

Heavy fighting South of Kokavil - Kilinochchi
An offensive element of the 57 Division, operating south of the Akkarayankulama- Terumurikkandy road has reached into the outer perimeters of Kokavil amidst stiff resistance by LTTE, today (Nov 16).

According to Wanni military sources, the troops have gained dominance over the Kokavil tower area, located Southwest of the Kokavil junction.

Infantry formations of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) s 57 and 58 divisions have entered Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) s celebrated political capital Kilinochchi. As we reported earlier, pitched battles have been raging across the town s western, southern and south western borders since the 23rd this month. By the 27th, troops had made inroads into the town by breaching the earth bund spreading from western to the southern borders of Kilinochchi, despite heavy LTTE resistance and bad weather conditions. Since then small groups of SLA commandos and intelligence units have been operating inside Kilinochchi town.

LTTE did attempt to prevent SLA from entering the town and also to regain lost areas several times. However, infantry units of the 57 and 58 divisions with the support of Commandos have been able to hold them off in almost all their attempts so far. Obviously, there have been casualties for both parties but we do not have the exact casualty figures with us right now.

The army has not officially declared the capture of Kilinochchi yet. Perhaps they are waiting till every last inch of the town is searched and declared safe and any LTTE resistance lingering in the area is hunted down. They may even be considering the possibility of an LTTE counterattack from the direction of Iranamadu jungles. Currently, search and defensive ops are continuing
