Sri Lanka`s military on Sunday resumed a major offensive aimed at capturing the political capital of the Tamil Tiger rebels as monsoon rains showed signs of subsiding, Defense Ministry officials said.
They said helicopter gunships were deployed to attack defensive positions of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and help ground troops make an advance on the town of Kilinochchi, the political headquarters of the rebels.

``MI-24 helicopter gunships conducted precision air assaults at identified LTTE resistance positions located at Murukandy, east of Akkarayankulama (on the western side of Kilinochchi),`` the ministry said.

It said the air campaign was in support of soldiers of the 57th division, who are approaching Kilinochchi from the western flank.

The military announced last week that it was about to capture Kilinochchi where the Tigers had received visiting foreign dignitaries, including Japan`s special peace envoy Yasushi Akashi.

Heavy rains stalled the military campaign with most parts of the country`s embattled north flooded by heavy monsoon rains and Cyclone Nisha, which lashed the area last week.

The country`s disaster management center said nearly 300,000 people were driven out of their flooded homes in the troubled northern districts alone while seven deaths have been reported.

This is not fair, because Velupillai needs a couple of more days to recover from his week-long B'Day celebrations!

I slowly get the impression that the SLA
knowing that a strong welcome committee is awaiting them in Killi
is pretending to take Killi
while grabbing other Hellam territory, knowing that Velu has fully concentrated his troops in Killi.

Will of course only be able to judge later on if this assumption is true. Great tactic, if proven to be correct.

Just to illustrate my previous post

Sri Lanka Takes Another Town In Battle For Rebel Capital

COLOMBO (AFP)--Sri Lankan government forces Monday wrested control over another town from Tamil Tiger rebels in their offensive to capture the political capital of the guerrillas, the defense ministry said.
Soldiers took the town of Kokavil, about 12 kilometers south of the Tigers' political headquarters of Kilinochchi, early Monday, the ministry said in a statement.
'This is the first time after 28 years that the army has gained full control over this area (of Kokavil),' the statement said. It gave no details of casualties, but added that fighting for the town began Sunday morning.

Batticaloa south LTTE leader dead

The Batticaloa South LTTE leader, Kalai Maduran was reported dead military sources said citing intercepted LTTE communication.

Clashes between LTTE terrorists and troops had occurred during the past few days in certain areas in Batticaloa, military sources said. Security forces and Police have also increased combined search operations and security patrols with the surge of sabotage activities and killings perpetrated by elements of LTTE in the East. Terrorists are constantly attempting to disrupt normalcy and civilian administration in the east as the outfit is running out of options against the advancing military forces in Wanni and North.

According to intercepted LTTE communication, Kalai Maduran has succumbed to death and was later given the self-styled 'Lt. Colonel' rank, by its Wanni leadership.

elephanthouse,

that seems to be the strategy. General Fonseka and all his leiutenants are playing the game very well. Even the Prime minister played the game by announcing killi would fall two or three months ago.

Mothernature itself has been causing the Sri Lankan government to fail its mission. This just goes to prove that the Sri Lankan government will fail if they continue to push into Tamil terrority.

Eelam will be achived, as the LTTE will not have to put forward power, Mothernature itself will get Eelam.

How long as Mahinda been saying that the kilinochi town will be captured, it is only a dream that Mahinda has and it will most definately not come true.

If the LTTE say they will take over Jaffna or the East tomorrow, it will happen within a matter of hours.

The LTTE always strive there goals and will never give up till they achieve it. The current situation can turn right around if The LTTE want to, so Mahinda back down your forces or else you will face intensive setbacks in the upcoming months.

The funny thing about the SLA is that more than half of them do not want to fight the LTTE, 10 000's of sla forces have fled the FLD's as they are afraid of the LTTE, and simply becuase they do not want to be there fighting for Mahinda.

On the other hand, ever single LTTE fighter is in the LTTE with bride and honor, as each and every single one of them want a better future for the Tamils.
