Colombo's cluster bomb attack on civilians in Vanni challenges international norms
TamilNet, Sunday, 30 November 2008, 02:21 GMT

Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) bombers that attacked the hamlet of Internally Displaced Persons bordering Piramanthanaa'ru and Uzhavanoor in the early hours of Saturday have deployed Russian made ODAB-500 PM cluster bombs in their indiscriminate attack that killed three civilians, including a child, eyewitnesses told TamilNet's Vanni correspondent on Saturday. Seven children were among the wounded. Colombo's use of cluster bomb comes as more than 100 countries are scheduled to meet in Oslo on Wednesday to sign a treaty banning the use of cluster bombs.

The indiscriminate bombardment has destroyed more than 29 shelters of the IDPs within the 'secure zone' announced by Colombo government a few weeks ago.

Cluster bombs release miniature bomblets and are used to spread damage over a wide area.

On 28 May 2008 diplomats from more than 100 countries meeting in Dublin in Ireland agreed on a draft treaty outlawing cluster bombs.

'Diplomats and politicians from around the world are about to deliver the kiss of death to one of the deadliest, indiscriminate non-nuclear weapons on the planet,' writes Chris Cobb of Canwest News Service on the treaty banning the use of cluster bombs.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said his government will stop using cluster bombs. However the United States opposed the ban. Israel, India, China and Pakistan did not participate in the meeting in Dublin.

According to Jane's Air-Launched Weapons, the ODAB-500 PM bomb was developed by Russia to provide the Russian Air Force with a high-speed low-level attack fuel-air explosive weapon for use against troops and material in the field, minefield clearance, parked aircraft and other exposed soft targets.

The ODAB-500 PM bomb is believed to have been cleared for carriage on MiG-21 'Fishbed', MiG-27 'Flogger' and MiG-29 'Fulcrum'.

Nice move Gordon Brown.

Sri Lanka is a terrorist state that :

1. Don't protect its Tamil minority.
2. Target children, while critizing child soldiers.
3. Don't give assisstance to civilians caught by floods.
4. Use food as a weapon.
5. Use media censorship to propagate lies.
6. Destroy/Rob its minorities welfare and properties.

Those CLUSTER bombs should be rusted, old and obsolate to kill only three civilians and injure others.

AT least, it should have killed 100 civilians.

Very bad cluster bombs. Probably LTTE had assembled it for Russia.

Anud mokku,

AT least, it should have killed 100 civilians.

The bomb's effective blast zone against infantry in the open is a 30 m radius, against aircraft in the open a 30 m radius, and against trenches and field fortifications a 25 m radius.

How many persons have been killed AND wounded ???

BTWW you seem to accept that SLAF does have cluster bombs !

see the DEFENCE.LK's desparation and pathetic ways of twisting NGO's humanitarian efforts as supporting tigers

NGO nexus hatches conspiracy against military operations
Triggered by fear and anxiety at LTTE's inevitable defeat at Mullaitivu, some top officials of a renowned NGO and a nexus of pro-LTTE groups have held clandestine discussions to sketch-out urgent and drastic methods to stall the Wanni military operations.

According to informed sources, the discussion has taken place in a star class hotel at Kollupitiya, Colombo recently, where suggestions considered were the raising of public agitation against the military surge in the North, character assassination campaigns against top military officers, and various other propaganda and agitation moves, informed sources reveal.

According to these sources, 18 prominent individuals of the Colombo elite, who are the main beneficiaries of the said NGO, have participated at the meeting, which was also attended by a well-known cinema actress. The NGO officials have threatened these individuals of severe sanctions such as the stopping of current funds, reconsidering proposals for future funding and other benefits in the event of the supporting nexus fails to halt the military advances, in the North, through widespread agitation, media manipulation and every other means.

'If in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu there is an LTTE debacle you people will soon have to find alternatives ways for a living,' the NGO officials had reportedly warned their Colombo nexus.

Meanwhile, further discussions were held to obtain details of whereabouts and sensitive information about government officials, anti-terrorist activists and media personnel, who are rigorously opposing and voicing opinions against the LTTE, as well and looking into promoting the 'victim industry', by giving publicity to so-called victims of the current military operations. The blue-prints are now being drawn up for the initial stage of this 'anti-war' campaign, highlighting 'victims' problems, varied out in tandem with mudslinging and character assassination campaign against key military personnel and critics of the LTTE.

Defence.lk will continue to keep a watch for such developments and keep you posted.

then the e-version of your race's Nut (tamil nut to be more specific) says...

so, AnuD was exactly right! - it should have been at least 30 injured, not to mention the deaths...

unless of course, the injured 'occupants' had each of their limbs in a 'shelter' of it's own!

:)))))))

madayn of the highest calibre, you are...
it's ok, you can take that as a complement!

you better get your act together and focus on the goal at hand - i.e. for my understanding 'the separate state of tamil ellam'.

you lot seems to be so disintegrated and haphazard since lately, it's now wonder that your fighting carder has to make so many 'testicle withdrawals' from the 'unceasing waves' of attacks of the mighty SLDFs!

:)))
