Srilanka govt Falls to the Army Chief bloodless coup.
Press Trust of india Sunday, 23 November 2008.
General Sarath Fonseka became de facto Head of Government(using the title Chief Executive and assuming extensive powers) of Srilanka following a bloodless coup d' tat Tonight. Earlier today, The president of Srilanka Mahinda Rajapakse attempted to dismiss General Sarath Fonseka and install G. A. Chandrasiri, Sri Lanka Army Jaffna Commander in his place.
General Sarath Fonseka , who was out of the country on a officila visit to India, boarded a commercial airliner to return to Srilanka. Senior army generals refused to accept General Sarath Fonseka's dismissal, which lead to the current political turmoil in Srilanka besides the war against the Tamil Rebels in the North.
Mahinda Rajapakse ordered the Colombo Katunayake airport closed to prevent the landing of the airliner, which then circled the skies over Colombo. In the coup, the Generals ousted Rajapakse's administration and took over the airport. The plane landed, allegedly with only a few minutes of fuel to spare, and Gen Fonseka assumed control of the government. Rajapakse along with his family members were put under house arrest and offered to go to india.
