'No Food shortages for IDPs' - GA

There is no shortage of food to Killinochchi and Mulativu areas say the government agent of Mulativu Imelda Sukumar. World Food Programme (WFP) and the government had been supplying the food and other essential items, the official told the BBC.

Mulativu government agent say, 'Today I saw 46 lorries of food going north. I met the WFP officials going with them.

Thirty of the lorries were for Killinochchi district while the other sixteen were going to Mulativu. There were other lorries carrying goods for sale'.

She said that the supplies were temporarily stopped when Omanthai checkpoint was closed few days ago.

'At the moment we only have food supplies for fourteen days. But the government and the WFP had given assurances that food supplies will return' say the Government Agent.

In a report issued recently, the Amnesty International has said the food supplies to Wanni were not sufficient. They also said the displaced people were facing malnutrition due to lack of nutritious food.

'There is sufficient amount of nutritious food in the area. We have a good network for distributing food. It is working well. There is no reason to worry. We never had any shortages for weeks'. The Government agent said.
