Asian Tribune: When compared with the rest of the world, are you happy with the situation of our country?

Minister Mervin Silva: World is now on its knees. We are standing upright and are in a good position. That is due to the guidance of our President s new philosophy - the Mahinda Chinthanaya.

I just pulled the following from Tamilnet:

Leader of New Left Front, Dr Wickramabahu Karunaratne, in a column that appeared last week in Lankadeepa accused India for instigating the current war in Sri Lanka. After enough damage has been done, now they push Rajapaksa government to stop the war and to go for talks. They
the Colombo government
spent 500 billions of national wealth to kill Tigers. Accordingly, for each Tiger killed, they have spent 50 millions. All this is wealth of the people. How many thousand Sinhala were sacrificed in this war? Today mounts of Sinhala dead bodies are stacked under Palmyra trees,' he wrote.
The Rajapaksa brothers, first Basil, later Mahinda, agreed to everything India instructed. What they said outside at Delhi was different from what they agreed for inside, Dr. Karunaratne wrote.
'Now Mahinda is planning to frighten Pirapaharan to convert him also to a puppet of Delhi. Apparently, Mahinda does not want to capture Kilinochchi. He only wants to go near and frighten the LTTE leader.'
'Discussions are made with downing of arms. Where do people discuss with arms aimed at each other. In any case, if discussions fail both parties will go back to arms. Therefore, it is idiotic to claim that discussions could start if only LTTE gives up arms.'

How do you destroy your own country?

If you are from Sri Lanka, wake up and smell the coffee (or the stench from dead bodies). I see quite a bit of animosity in this forum. It is not that much different from the animated discussions we had in internet forums more than 10 years or even 15 years ago. Your country is being destroyed from within by those you trust to lead the country. And if a Tamil who thinks that ends justify the means, think again. India has done everything it can do to nullify the attainment of that goal. The world powers will not do anything to jeopardize their chances of tapping into the Indian market. What this war has achieved for you (especially if you are Tamil), is laying a path to the destruction of the homeland you are fighting for. What happed to the way of life we once had? The corrupt politicians in Tamil Nadu are more interested in the next election than anything else. I am going to re-post my previous writings for shedding some light on India s intentions. Did you hear any of the political parties in Tamil Nadu voice concern for the loss of income for the Tamil fishermen in Sri Lanka s north? Why would they? CM Karunanidhi wants the Sri Lankan Navy to look the other way while the fishermen from Tamil Nadu go about their business in our waters. India s fisheries are depleted or near depletion. Since there are severe restrictions imposed by the Sri Lankan Navy on fishing by the Sri Lankan Tamils in the north, the Indian fishermen had been in our waters, repeatedly. People had seen them even from the shores of Pt. Pedro in the north during the Ceasefire period. There is no shortage of food in Sri Lanka while more than half the world s poverty is concentrated in India. Yet, they launch a probe to the moon! Also, could Bangalore have attained a name for itself as South Asia s Silicon Valley if our war never started in 1983? The Sri Lankan government and the LTTE put together have probably spent close to $10 billion on this war. That is not even counting the cost of lost opportunities in economic development and raising the standard of living for everyone on the island. Isn t it time to bury the past and start a new future, together? We have too many highly skilled Sri Lankan professionals abroad working for all sort of multinational corporations who can make a difference, if only we can move past this war. Believe me, many of them, deep within their hearts, wish that they had never left their land of birth. Because, nothing in Europe, North America or Australia can ever replace what they once had. It is called the peace of mind rooted in a way of life that embodies humility, hospitality to strangers, respecting our elders, our environment, and real consideration for other less-fortunate creatures.
