Counsel Shiral Lakthilaka says that the Mihin Air directors and officials are enjoying Board of Investments (BoI) concessions and many other dispensations regardless it is a company that went bankrupt after swallowing Rs. 3.7 billion public money. BoI concessions are usually provided to foreign direct investment.

Mr. Lakthilaka made these observations addressing the press briefing of Corruption Watch programme held in Colombo today to mark the third anniversary of the presidency of Mahinda Rajapakse. `Corruption Watch` has been set up to expose the corruption ad malpractices.

He said that Rs. six billion was allocated to this bankrupt company from this budget. Of the Rs. 3.7 billion granted earlier, Rs. 1.7 billion was lent by Bank of Ceylon which was affected due to the non-payment of this loan. Lanka Puthra Bank that was mobilized to assist small and medium scale enterprises went totally inactive as a result of unsettled loans of Mihin Air. The budget airline is in debt of Rs. 385 million to Ceylon Petroleum Corporation as well.
According to Mihin Air`s agreement with BoI, the company has agreed to bring Rs. nine billion investment to the country but not a single cent has been drawn yet. Further it ate Rs. 3.7 billion from public coffers, Mr. Lakthilaka said.

The Corruption Watch spokesperson Shiral Lakthilaka said that time was ripe for bringing the director board of this state owned company to books and Corruption Watch would perform that duty.

Way to go 'corruption watch'
this is excellent news....
It's high time some institution came up to tackle all these big sharks that has swallowed so much of public funds...

MihinAir was a failure from concept...and it will always be just that... A huge failure and huge black mark on a president who created it just to massage his ego...
about time those who profited from this are brought to the books

Though not mentioned in this article, one really valuable comment was made by one from this panel.

It says the CORRUPT DEALS OF ENGLISH SPEAKING OFFICERS ARE NOT INVESTIGATED.

It is the real picture of our society. It applies to the politician as well

A true patriotic will admit his mistake and pay it back even if it means forfeiting the presidential wage and giving it back to the state . But the dumb majority don t have the balls to standup against corruption and question it

Sri Lanka just cannot afford such non-sense like Mihin Air.
Scrap it and concentrate on keeping Sri Lankan Airways alive.

Man, Majority is not so dumb as you think. Wait until MR complete his current mission of eradicating terrorism. Then he'll get an early retirement if he has done any wrong and pay the price..

This is crazy.. after this much of loss this is ridicules of the GOSL to try and take Mihin off the ground again.. this should have been put to a pause for now..

Majority of this cursed country is so dumb & deaf. They let any culprit to do any thing and go scott free. That's why we are so behind.
Earlier these corrupt thugs swallowed millions. Now they swallow
billions. this is pure thuggery. Nobody talk, nobody care. When the
time is over, must track from 'Helping Hambantota to Mihin Air and
dont' know how many more to come, of this bunch of robbers before they vanish into a posh country, and capital punish them along with
the 'Bandit Queen of Srilanka and 2002 bunch of robbers.
