Tuesday, 18 November 2008 - 7:10 PM SL Time

[The killing of a doctor attached to the Navakkadu Hospital in Batticaloa on Sunday night sparked security fears with Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa assuring that adequate security would be provided to doctors serving in the North and East.

Dr. Palitha Pathmakumara was shot dead on Sunday by an unidentified gunman who stormed his quarters. Police media spokesman Ranjith Gunasekara said Dr. Pathmakumara`s wife who was also a doctor at same the hospital was in the quarters at the time of the tragedy.

Within minutes of the incident another hospital employee identified as T. Yogendran was also shot dead in his quarters. Vavunitivu police were conducting inquiries into the double-killing that has caused fear and anxiety among the hospital staff.]

While the motive for the kiiling is not known, it has to be borne in mind that the paramiltaries under CM Pillaiyan are the dominant force in this area. Rajapakse and Weerawansa love Pillaiyan. Any comments from them?
