Sk63,
Not necessarily it is all due to the war either. It is partly corruption, embezzlement and in some cases too many elections. Economis woes did not stop the military thrust.

Watever reason is that, there are woes which cant be wished away easily ! Only a MOdayan will place all the eggs in one Basket !

U have only 2.2 Billion USD reserves which are no good more than 2 months & with the way your GOSL is pampering the SL RS along with loss of GSP+, it is your GOSL who has to come down from its high pedestrial !

Do you think it is bcoz of incapablity of tigers that there are no bombs in Colombo & other places ?

lol !

I think you got that one wrong. It is import5ant to cut down all possible supply routes and I think 9again i am not an insider so I can not vouch), got the LTTE wrong footed. i think they talked a lot about Kili, got the LTTE to shift focus to Kili and captured Pooneryn. i knmow some journos have stated that it is not an important point, but let me suure you both the LTTE and the Army know how important Pooneryn is. That was a big loss to the LTTE and I am surprised how easily that fell

Do you know how many supply routes were there when IPKF was in ?

Still were they not able to come back strongly ?

Questions:
1. What (or who) is behind JVP's (and later the JHU) role in ensuring that Prabakaran can always count on what he interprets for the Tamil people to as the basis for this war. Which is the notion that Tamils will always be treated as second class Citizens in their land of birth and that the hold Buddhist clergy has on the politics of the land will never provide room for anyone other than a Sinhala person to believe that he belongs to this country as much as anyone else does. None of this feudal politics matter to the regional powers who need a pliable State in Sri Lanka to protect and strengthen their interests in the Indian Ocean.

2. Why did Prabakaran wanted Manhinda Rajapakse to be the President? VP watches and studies people for years if not for a decade or more. Could it be possible that Mr. President has so far delivered as expected?

3. The current phase of the war started after the gradual escalations turned into almost daily ambushes and claymore mine attacks against the SLA, attributable to LTTE fronts, as the speed of re-armament and specialized training among the various units of the Sri Lanka military establishment picked up. Did Prabakaran 'push' Sarath Fonseka and Gothabaya Rajapakse into open war war, after he became frustrated at the transition time from 'escalation' to full-fledged war? He knew exactly which buttons to push. What a short time span from two botched assassination attempts to Mavilaru.

4. How many of you think that this war is fought on a military front only? In 2001, Sri Lanka came very close to be being bankrupt. That scenario was avoided by the timely monetary assistance provided by Japan, the World Bank and India. Prabakaran is fighting this war on political, military and economic fronts. Can Sri Lanka afford to allocate $1.8 or even $2 billion dollars next year? Will Japan, the World Bank and India come to the rescue again? With Pakistan tottering on bankruptcy itself, not to mention the future application of 'war on terror' to territories within Pakistan by the next U.S. administration, will it continue to provide the Sri Lankan military with means of mass destruction?

5. Who was the Pooneryn army commander when the base was overrun by the LTTE in 1993, in a operation code-named Thavalaip Patchal (Leap Frog). It was the first land-and-sea ampibitious operation of that size undertaken by any military unit on the Indian sub-continent since the end of WW II. That was Fifteen years ago.

I find it amazing that you guys sit here an crow like a bunch of crones when velu is sending innocent people to the front knowing that they have not the training or the equipment to fight against the slf...and they are dying and you guys don't care...it's juast entertainment for you...no skin off your nose, eh?

if you had any kind of feelings for tamil in sl you should be putting pressure on velu to surrender so that no more tamils are killed trying to defend what cannot be defended....but that is not fun... and that would not lead to the promissed land...the land promissed to you by a psychopath.....just ask yourself... what has velu done since karuna left...maybe it was karuna that was the real brains behind the outfit????

Chennaiguy,

As I said i am no economist and I have no idea what foreign reserves means or their implications, let alone the amount. As i have always admitted I am nothing but a moda chingalaya. If you think SL has money enough to last 2 months, I am happy to take your word on it. Clearly, you are better educated in such matters.

On the supply route front I agree there are many. However, it is also true that most of them (not necessarily all) have been cut off now. What SLA can do is to make sure that they do the basics as well as they can. What you see in the battle front now is just that, SLA doing the basics and they are doing that right.

Dont get me wrong Chennai, As you may have noticed I am not in the habit of gloating militarty victories or moaning military set backs. I take them in my stride. I am only here to express my views and more importantly to learn from Tamil friends and members in the LNP community their point of view

Thanks
