Nov 01, Colombo: Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has decided to execute island wide power cuts from today until further notice due to difficulty in meeting the country's electricity requirement as production has slowed down following the Tamil Tiger air attack on Kelanithissa power station.
According to Ceylon Electricity Board, several days before the air strike, the American diesel power generation company, AES Corporation, operating the plant within the premises of the existing CEB Kelanitissa Power Complex, has stopped electricity production as the Sri Lankan government has failed to meet the payments.
The air strike has rendered the GT 7 turbine system that was generating 115MW and another power generation system which was adding 165MW to the national system inactive.
With this situation, CEB will have power cuts on all towns in Sri Lanka other than the Colombo city area as it is difficult to supply the demand at any given time, a CEB source said.

Nov 03, Colombo: Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has managed to repair some of the damaged electricity generating systems at the Kelanitissa Power Station in Colombo and replenish the national power grid.
The recent repairs carried out in one damaged system have enabled the CEB to replace 115MW which was lost due to the recent air strike by the Tamil Tiger terrorists.
However, GT7 turbine system which produces 50 MW and Steam Power Generators which were generating 40MW are yet to be repaired and the repairs are estimated to take few months.
An earlier decision mulled by the CEB to go for power cuts on a time table over the entire island has been abandoned due to sufficient rains being received at the catchment areas with all hydro power generators working on full scale.
