Associated Press Writer - COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) Sri Lankan air force jets pounded a Tamil Tiger suicide fighters` base deep in the country`s embattled north Thursday, and ground troops seized a major rebel defense line on the northwestern coast, the military said.
The airstrike on the base of the Tamil Tiger suicide fighters, known as Black Tigers, in the rebel stronghold of Mullaitivu came during an intensified government offensive against the guerrillas` de facto state in the north. Officials have pledged to crush the rebels by the end of the year.

Air force spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said pilots confirmed the attack was successful, but details of damage and casualties were not immediately available.

In the infantry clashes, soldiers fought intense gunbattles for nearly two weeks before capturing the rebel fortifications in Nachchikuda, a rebel coastal stronghold, on Wednesday evening, the Defense Ministry said.

Troops ``launched a multi-pronged offensive and marched toward Nachchikuda from three directions, destroying and capturing vital`` rebel positions, the ministry said in a statement.

The rebels ``have withdrawn from the area as the security forces intensified their military thrust,`` it said.

The military did not provide casualty details, in line with a new government policy, but said its troops inflicted ``heavy casualties`` on the rebels.

Fighting has escalated in recent months in the 25-year-old civil war as the military has captured a series of rebel bases and large chunks of territory in the north.

Also Wednesday, soldiers took control of Jayapuram, a rebel-held village in Kilinochchi.

The latest military successes came a day after the rebels` rudimentary air force bombed a power station on the outskirts of the capital and an army base in the north, injuring three soldiers.

The bombings, which showed that the rebels retain the ability to carry out startling attacks on the government, were a huge morale boost for the reeling guerrillas and an embarrassment for the military.

With reporters banned from the war zone, the media must depend on government and rebel statements for most information about the war.

It is difficult to contact rebel officials for comment because most communication lines to their territory have been severed.

The Tamil Tigers have fought since 1983 to create an independent homeland for ethnic minority Tamils, who have suffered marginalization at the hands of successive governments controlled by ethnic Sinhalese.

Sri Lankan jets hit rebel suicide bombers' base

What the dickens were these 'jets' doing when the grasshoppers were bombing Colombo and Mannar?

Nama serayak mun redda assatama awilla kelala giya, apey baka pandithayo thawama kasa kasa innawa misak kotinge maduruwanta karapu kehelmalak nehe.

Day in day out what we here is tiger bunkers, trenches, drains, pools, ponds, lakes, camps, airstrips, bases captured, bombed, pounded, destroyed, tiger cadres killed, wiped out, territory gained, chased away, chased back, etc etc. but STILL these supposedly weak and struggling tigers who are depicted to be weaponless, cadreless, moneyless, and hungry, in short all but finished, take off into the air (can't be from an air-strip as they have been accurately targeted and bombed and destroyed by our air force) evade ALL our high tech air defence systems, fly all the way to Colombo, do what ever bombing AND get away unscathed, AGAIN evading all our high tech systems on their way back. Then the following day we here news items such as..

It would be much better to down a 'tin can flying machine' than to drop million dollar bombs on an abandoned training camp!
One fine day, we may be able to hear (which I hope will never happen !!) that such a tin can plane has dropped a bomb on the Parliament complex or another vital installation.
The bomb attack on the Kelanitissa power station attack was averted by a Divine Power!
Had it been a success, the city would have been in dark and many hundreds of terrorists would have leashed an unpredictable number of bomb attacks on other major installations.
Our politicians say that the tiger attacks were repulsed... but for how long?
Our radar system lacks efficiency!
The SLAF lacks efficiency...it can not even shoot down a tin can terrorist kite

Pro LTTErs are saying that they are succeeded with Aerial attks to colombo. The question is that this the nineth time they came. that means our radars are not working. this the out put of aquiring very old- obsolete radars from India. India does not want to help us. thwy want to keep the war as it is. our poolish politicians are so corruptted and do not have courage to stand on the feet.
no problem
their sons and relatives are not living in the country.
one day these pools will ruine or country.
Other thing is that there might be rats and spies planted by LTTE in the SLAF. Specially in Electronic Warfare branch.

Sad, but true.

Just cannot imagine what would happen the day an ultra sensitive location would be hit by such a thing. I certainly would not like to see a 1983 public reaction with uncontrolled events for this country.
