CB allows limited depreciation of Rupee



The Sri Lankan rupee today declined to 110 vs. US Dollar as the Central Bank made a policy decision to allow limited depreciation of the currency. The Rupee had been trading at Rs 108.00 to the Dollar in the recent past.



The Central Bank's decision has been prompted by 'the recent sharp decline in export prices, prospects of lower export demand due to a likelihood of further slowing down in the global economy and the recent sharp appreciation of the US dollar against most major international currencies'.

The Central Bank has favoured 'a limited depreciation of the Sri Lanka Rupee so as to enable the real sector to maintain Sri Lanka's export competitiveness across all export and import competing industries'.

Solidarity with Sri Lankan Tamils



Puducherry (PTI): Shops and establishments and other business units will remain closed today (31) to show their solidarity with Sri Lankan Tamils and to urge the Centre to intervene and ensure a ceasefire is brought in force there.
R. Alagiri and Mohammed Nizam, organisers of the Puducherry State all Traders Association, told reporters here on Wednesday that all establishments would remain shut from 0600 hrs to 1800 hrs .

A meeting of Association office earlier adopted a resolution calling upon traders to observe the shutdown in line with the decision taken in neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

Another resolution expressed concern over the reported rise in killing of Sri lankan Tamils by the Army, while another one condemned the 'arms supply' by the Centre to the Sri Lankan Army.
