Free import of big onions hits local farmers in Sri Lanka

Growers of big onions are badly hit due to the free import of big onions. This has been brought it to the notice of the President and Ministers, Bandula Gunawardena and Ranjith Siyambalapitiya by Matale District MP and Local Government and Provincial Council Minister Janaka Bandara Tennekoon

According to big onion growers, last year when the government allowed the import of big onions a 20 per cent tax was imposed which kept the prices high thus allowing locally grown big onions to have a good market. However, this year no taxes were imposed on onion imports and this had deprived local growers of a good market for their produce.

Big onions are widely grown in the Dambulla electorate, represented by Minister Janaka Bandara Tennekoon. Onion growers in Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Galewela, Tambuttegama, Elahera and Bakamuna were due to hold a protest rally at Dambulla yesterday(21) over the free import of onions and they were to urge the government to impose a similar 20 per cent tax on imports as in the past.

Feeling sorry about poor farmers.

The country does not have proper mechanism of collecting statistics to make an accurate forecast of its crop of cultivations. Thus no way to balance supply & demand.

Politicians are blindly* make decisions so Indian farmers & intermediate whole sellers become rich day by day.
