The LTTE may be taking a right royal battering at the hands of the security forces at long last, and quite deservedly so, but the feats it has achieved during the past twenty five years or so are simply fabulous. It has become a role model for terrorist outfits the world over.
The LTTE has made a mockery of the much advertised global war on terror conducted by the US and its allies. It has risen above the law of many western countries which boast of seven star democracy. In the US, it has in its pocket none other than a former deputy attorney general to carry out its propaganda. In the UK, some lawmakers are working overtime to sanitise its terror. A similar situation prevails in Canada, Norway and some other countries.
The LTTE is also capable of remote-controlling the biggest democracy on earth, as we said on Friday. Indian politicians are holding demonstrations in public in its defence in defiance of a ban despite the fact that Prabhakaran is wanted in India over the killing of a former prime minister. Now, we hear Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi is planning to form a human chain across Tamil Nadu in support of the Tigers using human shields in the Vanni!
Time was when the LTTE spokesman Anton Balasingham in poor health was denied passage through India to return to the Vanni. But, today, the Indian Prime Minister entertains LTTE proxies and the LTTE is in a position to dictate terms to the Central Government and intimidate the Indian media by pelting stones at newspaper offices, roughing up newspaper agents and setting bundles of newspapers on fire in public.
Mighty India fought wars with China and Pakistan and invaded Sri Lanka in all but name to assert itself as a regional power. It was also instrumental in carving out Bangladesh. It has acquired nuclear capability and is test firing all sorts of missiles. But, the LTTE has brought it down a peg or two.
Canada has banned the LTTE, we are told. But, the outfit does not care two hoots about the Canadian law, does it? Its supporters stopped a bus carrying Sri Lanka`s national cricket team in Canada the other day and threatened the players with impunity. While the Sri Lankan Festival was being held at the Harbourfront last month and while Sri Lanka were playing Pakistan on Oct. 12, LTTE activists flew an aircraft carrying a banner with anti-Sri Lanka slogans for about one hour on each occasion.
Ironically, though the terror backers get permission for such menacing protests on Canadian soil against a Commonwealth member state, the Canadian mission in Colombo refuses to issue visa to Sri Lankan ministers on a priority basis! Humiliation that Minister Champika Ranawaka suffered a few months ago when he applied for visa as a guest of the Canadian government to attend an international conference is a case in point.
The LTTE nearly killed a group of seven foreign diplomats last year in Batticaloa by attacking a helicopter carrying them. The US ambassador Robert Blake and the Italian ambassador Pio Mariani sustained minor injuries. Those brave envoys who have the pluck even to censure the host country or to tell it how to conduct its internal affairs took it all lying down both literally and figuratively.
Such is the LTTE`s power!
Sri Lanka`s civil society (read the whole caboodle of NGOs thriving on foreign funds) is famous for staging protests at the Lipton Circus at the drop of a hat. Whenever the police or the armed forces conduct checks in the city, they let out a howl of protest and take to the streets against the harassment of civilians. We are on all fours with them on that score! Civil society organisations and the media must take up the cudgels for the rights of civilians wherever their violations occur. But, curiously, mum`s the word on the part of the much vibrant civil society of Sri Lanka, where the plight of the civilians forcibly held by the LTTE in the Vanni as a human shield is concerned. Is it that the civilians of the Vanni, in the book of the NGO worthies, are some kind of aliens sans human rights on this planet? Or, is it that those respectable men and women are wary of championing the cause of the Vanni civilians, as they don`t want to antagonise their paymasters sympathetic to the LTTE?
They seem to believe violations of people`s rights amount to human rights violations only when the perpetrators happen to be legitimate states! We stop short of pressing those gentlemen and gentlewomen to condemn the LTTE and risk their fat salaries and attractive perks. We are only wondering how clever and affluent the LTTE must be to silence an otherwise cantankerous NGO fraternity so effectively and make the pugnacious human rights activists eat out of the palm of its hand.
Those are no mean achievements but what really takes the cake is how the LTTE is carrying out gas attacks on the armed forces without a whimper of protest from the omnipotent international community led by the champions of the global anti-terror drive.
On Sunday, the LTTE out of its desperation to defend Kilinochchi launched a poison gas attack on the advancing army. However, the frontline troops were equipped to withstand it and they forged ahead beaching as they did what is described as the last major LTTE defence line before Kilinochchi. There have been reports of the LTTE having smuggled through India various chemicals for unknown purposes. It is believed that the LTTE has been trying its hand at the manufacture of crude chemical weapons, though no clear evidence of such a threat has surfaced yet.
What is surprising is not the LTTE`s recourse to gas attacks a terrorist outfit fighting with its back to the wall with no hope of future is capable of anything but the nonchalant manner in which the respectable members of the world community have treated that barbaric act. They would have promptly condemned Sri Lanka and even imposed sanctions if the security forces had carried out a poison gas attack on the LTTE.
In a world where sovereign states are treated like pariah outfits and vice versa, it is no surprise that terrorism thrives taking its toll on global democracy.

| World always wanted countries like us and the government like ours to be below the par levels cos they don't want us to get too smart. We Sri Lankans are known to be good at anything given the opportunity and we know how to excell in what we do. This is what exactly LTTE is doing other soils. |

Never when Tigers bomb SL cities, transport facilities, attack Buddhist temples, captire large reas killing thousand SL soldiers!Thats not war, right India?
The war is only when SL army fighting Tigers.

I'm sure the 'fabulous achievments' of the LTTE will pale in comparison to that of the Sri lankan state!
After all it's not like the LTTE can boast of Genocide as an achievement, unlike the state. |
