CHENNAI: The lack of public toilets has turned street corners in Park Town into cesspools of waste.

In the last two months, sanitation problems have turned worse, with even the existing urinals being locked up. Faeces and pools of urine have collected in a busy intersection of the primarily commercial area.

'We cannot even sit in our shops,' says Harish Kumar, a glass wholesaler, whose store is near the junction of Ayyapillai Street and Venkatachala Mudali Street. 'We can't do business, nobody comes to our shops,' he says.

'People hate to walk across the street because of the stink,' laments another shop owner. The site is opposite a temple, which now attracts fewer devotees, because of the open defecation in the area. Mounds of garbage have resulted in breeding of mosquitoes and the spread of disease.

'The whole street has become an open toilet,' says Fatheraj Jain, secretary of the Chennai District branch of Exnora International. The open defecation has angered the locals. However, because of the lack of facilities, it's difficult to blame anybody. 'We bring in a lot of revenue and are taxed heavily, but there are no facilities to show for it,' Mr. Jain says.

Residents demand that the existing public convenience complex be reopened and the Chennai Corporation post a person to run the facility. They want the Corporation to build more toilets in busy areas such as the junction of Wall Tax Road and NSC Bose Road, and on Ekambareeswar Koil Agraharam street.

The traders also want waste disposal streamlined by assigning specific places for dumping, and regular removal of the garbage.
