Sri Lanka government is currently mulling to increase the standard fixed rate of water bills to minimize the losses.

Non-cabinet Minister for Water Supply and Drainage Mahinda Amaraweera stated that this measure will be taken to reduce the losses incurred by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board.

Currently a monthly loss of 200 million rupees is borne by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board in providing the pipe-borne clean water to residences though out the island. This loss is due to the increased salaries, increased fuels prices, and the increased cost of chemicals

Increased fuel prices? Oils prices are down to US$77 today. What are you talking about sir? the whole loss is because of mismanagement. And wastage of material and water itself. There is more staff inducted when ever the governments change and there is more staff that who are not doing anything at all. They ask for money when they come to fix meters and check meters. Water consumers palm something to them so they will get a reduced bill. No wonder there is a loss. There is much of water board vehicles we see running around every day in streets of Colombo. Some times you wonder where these vehicles go and for what?

Please look into the real factors than changing the billing.

We are told world market prices determine local petrol and diesel prices which are raised every time the oil price goes up.

Is there a world market price for water also to rise its price?

Want to know the reasons why the water supply board costs have gone up ? Just look at the number of brand new toyota pick ups that have been bought when there are vehicles at a fraction of that cost which will serve the same purpose !

This is all mismanagement and corruption and hopefully the those responsible will be prosecuted by the courts SOON.
