Sorry for the delay
Even my name has Sanskrit roots. Many Tamil Hindus have Sanskrit root name beacuse Sanskrit is the language of many Hindu religious books, just like Pali language to the Buddhism.
Thivya,
King Asoka has given the title of Dev nama priya (the one who loves gods) to Sri Lankan King Tissa. Note that King Asoka himself had the title of Beloved of the gods Priya Darshin. Thus the King Tissa of Sri lanka became Devanampiyatissa
Sri Lanka Mahavamsa Inscriptions:
The earliest inscriptions so far discovered were from the reign of King Devanampiyatissa, who ruled from 247 to 207 BC, the chronology of Geiger being followed throughout this work. He was a contemporary of King Asoka of India whose famous edicts inscribed on stone pillars in Brahmi script.
In these inscriptions, Ashoka refers to himself as 'Beloved of the Gods' and 'King Priya-darshi.' The identification of King Priya-darshi with Ashoka was confirmed by an inscription discovered in 1915. The inscriptions found in the eastern part of India were written in the Magadhi language, using the Brahmi script. In the western part of India, the language used is closer to Sanskrit, using the Kharoshthi script, one extract of Edict 13 in the Greek language, and one bilingual edict written in Greek and Aramaic. |
