Tamil Nadu Cheif Minister threatens to quit over Sri Lanka Tamils

Lankan News Replies

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has threatened to withdraw support to the UPA if the Delhi Centre does not intervene to stop the alleged genocide of Lankan Tamils, says a NDTV Chennai news report.

The Sri Lankan army`s fight to storm LTTE`s stronghold in Kilinochchi is having its repercussion in India.

This latest threat from TN CM comes after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured him of intervention and the National Security Advisor R.K. Narayanan expressed India`s concerns to the Sri Lankan envoy.

`If this atrocity against Lankan Tamils does not stop, then we will have to find an answer to the question, whether we require this government? I tell you with all humility that this meeting is to tell you this,` said Karunanidhi.

While reports from Colombo indicate the Sri Lankan forces are closing in on the LTTE, just 2 kilometres away from their political capital Kilinochchi, political observers say this has forced Karunanidhi to up the ante to stop the Sri Lankan offensive.

With talks of early Lok Sabha polls in the air, it is a political tightrope walk for both the DMK and the Centre.

Any failure to stop the genocide against Lankan Tamils will only make the anti-incumbency wave caused by inflation much stronger in Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, national secretary of India`s Communist Party D. Raja has said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should talk directly to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to resolve the ethnic Tamils issue instead of dealing through bureaucrats.

`Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister must take up the issue at the government level. They should not leave it simply to the bureaucrats to handle the situation,` he has said.

'I am urging the Centre, peacefully and decently, that we would be forced to find an answer to the question whether this (DMK) government is needed if our requests go unheeded. I HAVE TO REMIND THAT I AM FOREMOST A TAMIL. I also happen to be the Tamil who is ruling the Tamil Nadu state with the responsibility as a guardian to the people of Tamil Nadu.'

'It counts the same whether a Tamil gets killed here or in Sri Lanka. This rally is held to express publicly that we urge the Indian government not to give up us (Tamil Nadu Tamils) in our struggle to safeguard them (Tamils in Sri Lanka).'

Hon.Karunanidhi, CM, Tamil Nadu

Eezham Tamils not abandoned by Tamil Nadu - LTTE
TamilNet, Wednesday, 08 October 2008, 13:55 GMT

Expressing gratitude on behalf of the Eelam Tamils for the solidarity shown by the leaders and masses of Tamil Nadu, the Political Division of the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE), in a statement issued in Tamil said Wednesday that Tamils, who were facing an onslaught by the indiscriminate shelling and bombardment by the Sri Lankan forces, were inspired by the expression of solidarity from Tamil Nadu.

The LTTE statement which described the plight of the thousands of Tamils uprooted from their homes and villages and forced to seek refuge under the trees due to the genocidal war launched by the Mahinda Rajapaska regime, said the solidarity expressed by the political leaders in Tamil Nadu carried a significant message at a time when the Rajapaksa regime was 'conceited in its military aggression with the thinking that there is no one in the world to extend their voice or active support to the Eezham Tamils.'

All the Sinhala forces and parties were giving support to the genocidal war being waged by the Rajapaksa government with a wrong assumption that even Tamil Nadu was not going to help the Eezham Tamils, the statement signed by LTTE Political Head N. Nadesan said.

Countries opposed to India were militarily helping the Sinhala state and some countries of the world were providing financial support, the LTTE statement accused. 'Making use of the intra-state diplomatic relations, the Sinhala state was engaged in focusing all of its efforts to crush the just freedom struggle of the Eelam Tamils.'

Now Tamilnadu is LTTE's backyard.Even injured LTTE carder's getting treatment in Tamilnadu.
