Thursday, June 19, 2008, (Chennai)In an attempt by Chennai Municipal authorities to keep the city as clean as Singapore, people will now be charged a fine for littering.
Not long ago Chennai was nicknamed 'Stink-ara'. So the city's civic body is adopting the Singapore formula and 450 field officers are deployed across the city to catch and fine people for dirtying their surroundings and public places.
It's s a Rs 100 spot fine for dumping garbage on the road, Rs 500 for construction debris.
Rajesh Lakhoni, Corporation Commissioner, Chennai said, 'We've fined more than 800 people to the tune of 2.5 lakh. We were told that unless you fine people, they will not take it seriously. So we decided to follow Singapore, which is called a fine city.'
There are protests and arguments and also at times the whodunit puzzle, but the message seems to have sunk in.
A young boy having ice cream said he would pocket his stick instead of throwing on the street.
But some are angry and say that they should be given a warning first and not just fine straight away.
Meanwhile the best bet to save one self from a fine is to use the dustbins around.
