Ceylinco chief says ready to intervene in Sakvithi issue in Sri Lanka

Sunday, 5 October 2008 - 4:43 AM SL Time

Ceylinco Consolidated Chairman Deshamanya Lalith Kotelawala said yesterday he was ready to intervene in the settlement of Sakvithi investment issue and do justice to the depositors if President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Finance Minister and the Central Bank extend their support to him.

Kotelawala made this observation when the depositors of Sakvithi Investment Limited met him in Colombo Wednesday. The depositors appealed to Kotelawala to directly intervene in the settlement of this issue as they have been rendered helpless by Sakvithi Ranasinghe who engaged in an unauthorised financial business in the guise of an investment company flouting the provisions of Finance Companies Act.

`I can intervene in this matter and do justice to depositors without expecting anything in return if the President and the Central Bank help me,` he said.

He was assigned with the task of rehabilitating Asian Finance, Finance and Guarantee and Panadura Finance Companies by the Central Bank after they were declared bankrupt. The people who invested in these companies were paid back their deposits.

Kotelawala said he brought the Bank of Credit and Investment Company`s Sri Lanka branch under the Seylan Bank after its bankruptcy and was able to do justice for the depositors
