The weekend newspapers reported that the Indian Prime Minister was avoiding the meeting with Sri Lankan President at the United Nations (UN) General assembly in New York. It has been reported that this is the consequence of Sri Lanka President s failure to fulfill the promises given to the Indian. Prime Minister at the previous UN General assembly and at the Commonwealth conference. It is also learnt that the Indian. Prime Minister avoided the meeting because he was displeased over the Sri Lanka President s repudiation of promises to solve the ethnic problem , and his failure to adhere to the time frame. But, according to information provided by political sources of Tamil Nadu , the Indian P.M. may have feared the protest campaign to be staged tomorrow in every town in Tamil Nadu against Sri Lanka Govt, s war and this was the underlying cause for him to avoid meeting S.L. President.
Tomorrow is Father of Ahimsa (non-violence) , Mahatma Gandhi s commemoration day. When Late Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India and when J.R. Jayewardene was the President of Sri Lanka , Rajiv Gandhi sent a confidential letter to Jayewardene pressurizing him to stop military operations pointing out that Jayewardene who professes to follow Mahatma Gandhi s non violence had rejected that policy during the last 48 hours by his military action.. It was India s policy , not only during Rajiv Gandhi s time , even during Indira Gandhi s period to compel Sri Lanka to resolve Sri Lanka s ethnic conflict by negotiations in keeping with the non violence campaign of Mahatma Gandhi. The Communist party of India recalling this policy have decided to start a fast throughout Tamil Nadu to exert pressure on the Central Govt. of India to force Sri Lanka to stop the war. This fast is scheduled to commence tomorrow.

The Communist party which is integrated with the Congress Govt. resigned from the Congress Govt. as a mark of protest against the latter s signing of the nuclear agreement with the U.S. Govt. After the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, it is the minority parties which carried on the campaign in Tamil Nadu in support of the Sri Lankan Tamil people. Now that the Communist party has started acting on behalf of the Sri Lanka Tamil population in regard to their problems, this issue has to be reckoned with.

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister , Jayalalitha issued a statement supporting the fast to be launched by the Communist party during the weekend. This is a new development. Jayalalitha has been publicly known as a Leader vehemently opposed to the LTTE . Not once or twice, but many times has she openly told that the LTTE is making assassination bids on her . Throughout her career in office she held a firm handle controlling the LTTE activities. The Indian Communist party was never a party accused of having

links with the LTTE.

Once, when Sri Lanka s Tamil community was abysmally suffering due to the war ,the Communist party pressed India to mediate to stop the war. But, went on to attack the LTTE . We don t need instructions from you as to what we should and what we should not do , the Communist party told the LTTE. We don t need the instructions of those who are not prepared to heed us , the Communist party asserted. We are mounting protests on behalf of the Tamil population in Sri Lanka, and not for any other , it added.

The commencement of a fast against the war in Sri Lanka by the Communist party which is not linked to the LTTE ,and Jayalalitha who is a staunch opponent of the LTTE supporting this move is something the Indian State Govt. cannot just brush aside.

The aim of the Communist party and Jayalalitha is to wrest the Lankan Tamil people s issue from the LTTE, make it part of Tamil Nadu people s problem ,and create a hostile environment between Indian Congress Govt. and Tamil Nadu people.

At the last elections, the Congress Govt. received a fair welcome in Tamil Nadu. Based on an analysis of the election results, some have predicted that , in the future, the Tamil Congress party can override the Tamil Nadu party and consolidate its power in Tamil Nadu. Yet, the Congress Govt. is today being criticized for supporting the Sri Lanka war . The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi too is in a deep dilemma for being a partner of the Tamil Congress , while having vociferously supported the Eelam struggle on behalf of Lanka s Tamil people. How much Lanka s issue is whipped up in Tamil Nadu by the Communist party and Jayalalitha in their common stand , by so much will the quandary of the Congress Govt. and Karunandhi aggravate.

The next few days will be crucial not only for the Sri Lankan Govt. and the LTTE but , also for the Indian State Govt. The decisive battle to capture Kilinochchi from the LTTE is being fought during the next few days. It is during this period , the fast staged by the Communist party and the protest campaign of other parties sympathetic to the LTTE will be reaching top gear in Tamil Nadu. Jayalalitha who is voicing her protests on behalf of the Sri Lanka Tamil community is also to come to the open more aggressively at this critical time.

India s General election is around the corner . The protests staged in Tamil Nadu by the Communist party and Jayalalitha s determination on behalf of the Tamil community of Sri Lanka are excellent opportunities for the Congress Govt. to seize at the General election .

If the Congress party is to exploit this opportunity and gain votes , it will become necessary for the Congress party to mediate and stop the war in Sri Lanka.. That will be to LTTE s advantage It is significant to note that in 1987 , when J.R. Jayewardene s Govt. launched military operations to capture Jaffna , it is the Congress Govt. which intervened and stopped the war, and secured a solution for the Tamil community via the Provincial Council system.

In the period 1995 , when Chandrika s Govt. commenced its military operations to capture Jaffna , this same Congress party allowed the Govt. to capture Jaffna but, sought out a solution to the Tamil community in the name of Regional Councils. Like Jaffna in those days, Kilinochchi today, is a town not under the administrative control of the Govt. Mahinda Rajapakse Govt. is today entering Kilinochchi violating the fundamental condition that empowers the Provincial Councils system secured for the Tamil people by India in 1987 to divide the North and East .

In the circumstances, the question posed by Tamil nadu Jayalalitha and Senior Tamil political Leader Ananda Sangaree, staunch LTTE opponents, is how India can turn a blind eye to this Tamil problem now ?

Biggest mistake, Rajive payed dearly for this. Only if 'Operation Liberation' was allowed for few more days, VP would have been dead & buried for 21 years now
This is the Indian curse
