Jaffna library was burnt down in 1979 by the SL police and army.
Everything happened after 1975, was mainly a result of VP taking up arms.
If we debate about the past mistakes done by the Sinhalese & Tamils we can go on for ever. We will never find a solution to this grave problem.

But we must be clear that it should be done to develop Sri Lanka - not to promote Nationalism is any ethnic group.
In India quasi-Federalism could keep all the communities together because it was done before nationalism raised its head.
In the UK Scottish and Welsh people shouted separation but the Labour government conducted referandums among those communities and set up Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly thereby nibbed the nationalism at its bud. Now those communities are satisfied.
If Sri Lanka made both languages Official in 1956 we woulndn't have had nationalism or conflict
or in 1958 B-C Pact would have been implemented but as you say we never had leaders with a vision or intelligent. They come to power to promote family members at the expense of the country. Teaching Swabasha languages to the poor and English to the rich can only make our country go poor and divisive. |

It's difficult to determine if the egg or the chicken came first. But its a historical fact that seed of discord was sown by Sinhala Only Act (which is still not repealed) and the antiTamil riots divided the communities.
LTTE was founded only in 1976 though many rebel groups were mashroomed in 1974 after the audiences were shot dead in a Tamil International Conference held in Jaffna by the SL police in that year. |

As I said before, no point in the blame game.
If you try to give solutions to the problems that existed in 50s we will not get anywhere.
Sri Lanka needs to develop an ideology that is suited to Sri Lanka in 21st century. An ideology taking into consideration the new technologies.
Today the job opportunities does not necessarily need a university degree. Professional courses like CIMA, CIM and various IT degrees and courses have changed the landscape of job market.
Government jobs does not has the same appeal as in the 50s. Currently there is big scarcity of IT professionals in Sri Lanka. BPOs cannot find enough people in Sri Lanka. World has changed my friend.
We need to think what is best for Sinhalese Tamils & Muslims without any biases.

Did all 2500 years we live with foreign Aids ?
Yes!
The foreign aid to the island first started arriving about 2500 years ago. First they were in the form of human resources and euqipment and knowhow came from India.
As the country developed India (particularly South India) offered further aid in therms of trade and technology. Most of the technical knowhow for building irrigation systems of the Central and NE provinces came from India.
The country was also offered various cultural aid, in the times of King Ashoka.
In recent times, Portugese were the first Western power to offer development aid to the island. Several Harbours, like Gall, Colombo and buildings for seats of governments, like in Jaffna Fort, Kotte were provided by Portugese about 600 years ago.
Then the Dutch were the largest foreign aid doner to the island. The canels in Negambo, the Colombo Fort, and enhancement of Gall Port, which are still contributing for a large percentage of island'd GDP, bear testimony.
Followed by British... almost all the current tranasport infra was built with British help...
Japanese came later, after JR made a plea at San Fransisco and made Japanese cry. Japanese feel sorry, still and keep feeding the modayas!

Yes, Thanks to the ''Open Economy'' introduced by a UNP Government.
And since you reminded CIMA, CIM etc. let me to tell a nice story. I have met many JVP Activits (at the University basically) who were blaming/protesting/collecting signs against Private Degrees etc. But most of them were doing CIMA, CIM like courses. Remember western powers invaded us. Converted Buddhist & Hindus to their religion.
They didn't come to develop Sri Lanka. They took whatever they can take.
