Tamils can and are willing to forget and forgive the past riots and destruction. Even today, Sinhala ONLY Act is enforced in every walk of life, police reports are still written and Tamils/Muslims are forced to sign and all the govt notices are only in Sinhala. Even the minister in charge of implementation of Tamil official language legislation passed in 1987, DEW Gunawardene, confessed that it has not been implemented for lack of translators and Tamil-type writers.
The govt could not train 5,000 translators but could recruit 195,000 and lately 50,000 (20K and 30K) to the security forces.
After all the destruction and deaths Sinhala president comes up with discredited, failed and outdated 13th Amendment which then Chief Minister, a choice of JR and India, declared unworkable as the sole power and budgetery control were vested with the Colombo Sinhala Govt.
To forget the past there must be something new, what is it? Bombing and starvation of Tamil civilians?

In a telephone conversation with Foreign Secretary Kohona, Ambassador Akashi, the Japanese peace envoy, vehemently denied that Japan was reconsidering its aid policy, vis- -vis, Sri Lanka. He confirmed that the aid policy remained unchanged. |

Well,Japan has a right to curtail aid to Gosl and to call a Spade Not a Spade.The present situation is that,the Tigers are Terrorist,why would anyone want to hold peace talks with this outfit.What percentage of the tamil population in SL would accept the tigers ruling them? Not that many tamils would want the present style of sinhala domination over them either.Some durable solution has to be found within a united SL.By curtailing aid to SL,Japan is no nearer to any political solution,but making matters worse by sending wrong signals to the tigers.
Sri Lanka stood by Japan after world war 2 which gained it recognition within the world comunity,which I am sure Japan will not forget.In this hour of need,Japan should stand by Sri Lanka and help bring a peaceful settlement without threats and intimidation. |

| SL must explain Japan why we need a miliray solution to eradicate LTTE before providing a solution to this proble. I don't think Japan will cut any money they have allocated to SL on this issue. |
