A group of thugs is alleged to have used abusive language on the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association and threatened him with death in the early hours of yesterday.
SLWJA General Secretary, Lake House journalist Poddala Jayantha, who was highly critical of non-Cabinet Labour Minister Dr. Mervyn Silva, following the latter`s episode at the Rupavahini Corporation, told a media conference yesterday that a group of about 15 people had arrived by van and jeep at his Moragahahena, Kahatuduwa residence residence at around 3.00 am on Monday. `They wanted me to come to the road as they wanted some information from me. I was reluctant to open the door and my wife started screaming. Following her screams, my neighbours came to my house. On seeing the crowd, both vehicles sped away. Before leaving the thugs threatened me with death and used abusive language,` Jayantha said.
However, they had not said why they had threatened him but Jayantha said that he has no doubt that last morning`s incident was connected to Mervyn Silva`s epsisode at the SLRC on December 27.
He said he noted down the number of both vehicles and the jeep appeared to belong to the Police. Subsequent inquiries revealed that it was a Police jeep belonging to the Matara Police.
When contacted by The Island, Matara SSP P. B. G Ayupala said that the said jeep bearing No.306 belonged to Matara Police and it left for Ratmalana on Sunday evening to bring some suspects to Matara. He also said that if anyone makes a complaint he would hold an investigation. Meanwhile, Matara HQI P. Sarathchandra said that it could be that somebody used this number on another jeep.
The Mervyn Silva episode at the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation has taken a new turn where the investigations are being directed at identifying employees of the Corporation involved in the incident with Mervyn Silva, Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association President Sanath Balasuriya told the press conference.
He said action must be taken to ensure media freedom, good governance and social justice as they are hard to find in today`s political situation. `People are looking forward to live in a society free of political violence and it is time for justice to prevail.`
Non-Cabinet Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said he was not aware of the incident but would immediately check on it since he is a representative of the Matara District.
The media briefing, held at the Sri Lanka Press Institute, was convened by the Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association, Federation of Media Employees Union, Sri Lanka Muslim Media Forum, Sri Lanka Tamil Journalists Alliance and the Free Media Movement.
After contacting the Matara SSP Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said some vehicles had been robbed from the Matara Police area recently and on information received, the Matara Police dispatched a team in the said jeep to Ratmalana to arrest some suspects. Some of the suspects were arrested and one of the robbed vehicles recovered. It was with the suspects in that robbed vehicle that the Police had gone in search of some other suspects and had tapped at Poddala Jayantha`s door. When the latter had mistakenly thought thugs had come to harm him.
When The Island told him why they had threatened Jayantha with death and abused him in filth, the Minister said that Jayantha would have been aggressive to them when they arrived at his place.

What do you expect? Mervyn to keep quiet? Hunting has begun.
Next the Rupavahini clan who held Mervyn captive for 4 hours.
Heads will roll and several will die.
MR will carry on with his Satakaya and pure white National dress smiling embracing children.

This is like the University of New South Wales using the Police and the Courts to threaten me. Today, I received a letter from the University's lawyers stating:
'I am also instructed to advise that the University directs you not to attend its premises without the written consent of the Vice Chancellor'
Given that I am a non-violent person and that I have a public record of that and that I am physically not stronger than the make administrators of the University - the only apparent reason for this threat is that I am a Tamil associated with the Tamil Tigers.
The jounalists of Sri Lanka need to have the support of the public to protect them against political attacks. They must become the people's journalists. That was how this journalist appears to have been saved.

Gaja, if you are a non violent person, as you claim, how on earth can you support tamil tigers who are most ruthless in this entire world. University is being very nice to you by advising. If you were in Slanka, you would not be alive to be talking.
This is the trouble with some tamils. They destory good systems and values wherever they go. For example, Canada, Toronto was a very safe and nice place until canadian authorities took in hundreds of thousands of tamil refugees from Slanka. Now, the place is unsafe for ordinary canadians. There are shootouts, hold ups, credit card scams, kidnapping. all this is done by Slankan tamils. Canadian police is turing a blind eye. they should shoot at sight those tamil tiger supporters.
In Australia also, situation has been a bit like in Canada. But now the authorities are realising that they are putting the ordinary australians' life at risk by allowing tamil tigers to run guns. Still they are not harsh enough. They should shoot at sight. And shoot to kill.

Soldiers and police are supposed to protect citizens from criminals and perpetrators of crimes.
In Sri Lanka the guards turn criminals, protectors become the aggressors.
The govt rearmed paramilitaries to kill civilians.
Police and soldiers encouraged villagers to kill 28 detainees in the Bindunuwewa camp and all those aided and abetted the murders were set free without any retrial. The law enforcement officers and many law administering judges are in collaboration except some neutral judges giving a green signal to the criminals. The result is that many murders political and civil are not investigated or brought to justice.

Mervyn did NOT assault the News Director at Rupavahini.
The Gang that visited Jayantha's house at 3.00am paid a courtesy call and Jayantha turned abusive. So they had to threaten him.
What more fairy tales can we expect from the spin ministers from the govt.? They are simply unbeatable. |

Thanks to the JHU and Sinhala Racism, monks have become so bold that they even consider a Supreme Court Judge as some one who can be abused and threatened at will. Lets wait and see what action will be take against this hoodlum in saffron robe. |
