Sri Lanka`s CFA abrogation only benefits the LTTE - Says UNP
Monday, 7 January 2008 - 9:31 PM SL Time

The main opposition UNP has charged that the government`s decision to abrogate the Ceasefire Agreement has weakened the country both internationally and domestically and had benefited the LTTE`s aspirations for a separate state. `President Rajapaksa should explain to the people of Sri Lanka why he has abandoned the framework for a negotiated settlement to the conflict in the country. And why he has placed us at an economically and internationally disadvantageous position. Moreover, he should clarify how he hopes to conduct peace talks with the LTTE from this weakened position,` the UNP said in a statement.

`The UNP reiterates its position that while security measures are required to counter terrorism, long-lasting peace is possible only through a negotiated settlement, while the eradication of terrorism is possible only through democracy.

As Lord Buddha advocated, hatred does not end hatred. Furthermore, terrorism does not end terrorism. Even at this juncture, the only way forward is a political solution to the conflict that is acceptable to all communities,` the statement noted.

Tissarani Gunesekera was one of the Harshest Critics of RW during the last presidential election. This person went out of their way to Support Punnakku Rala. Just look at what this person is saying today...

The regime needs the JVP for survival. The JVP needs a total war in order to justify its support to the regime. These twin compulsions will push the country along an increasingly extremist path as the year progresses. The Tigers are extremist by nature they would want the war to turn into a humanitarian catastrophe in order to facilitate a Kosovo/East Timor outcome. Perhaps Vellupillai Pirapaharan and the Mahinda Rajapakse-JVP-JHU combine deserve each other. But do the people of Sri Lanka, Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim, deserve their elected and self appointed leaders?

Whether Tigers are going to benefit or not, that we have to wait and see.

But other side (GOSL) will definitely benefit from many types of commissions.

What a chinthanaya!

LTTE is up against all tyrranies, they make their own luck, they dont depend on others!!!

LTTE are on a definitive strategy and GOSL are not, thats the difference!

This is politicking. CFA abrogation enables the IC to understand the mindset of the Southern polity. When the IC proscribed LTTE and gave an upper hand to the govt it went on to destroy LTTE and Tamils aspirations instead of using the opportunity to negotiate a genuine solution to the problem.

If the proposals are genuine and IC guarantees the outcome of negotiation LTTE will sure compromise on its stance. What makes LTTE insist on separation is the insincerity and dishonesty of Sinhala political leaders in accommodating the minorities.

Even after 50 years of deaths and destruction Sinhala Only is still enforced instead of repealing it to give way for Tamil to be used as official language in N and E.

Ari...

I go by the results... not by emotions... prayers or wishful thinking... that tomorrow morning terrorism would go away.

Now you tell me after Mahinda took the reins... whether the LTTE' got itS as5 on fire or not.

Sri Lankans allowed too much... simply too much room for the LTTE to grow very dangerously... solely due to their (Sri Lankans') lethargic, and totally unacceptable laziness. I agree there.

It's now time to forget the past... and prepare to answer the one who's knocking on our door... Then pay the correct price, buy that Wilkinson and behead the LTTE monster.... without trying shake hands.

THE FULL PRICE MUST BE PAID... HOWEVER PAINFUL IT IS... FOR THE PAST STUPIDEST MISTAKES MADE.. APPEASING THE LTTE TERRORISTS

Friendly advice... stay away from Wanni, Ari.

OTTAWA ? The NPD remains deeply concerned by the government of Sri Lanka's decision to withdraw from a ceasefire agreement with the separatist Tamil group, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

'A formal end to the ceasefire agreement will only escalate the hostilities against innocent civilians,' said NDP leader Jack Layton. 'Canada should join allies in the United Nations and the Commonwealth to stabilize the situation through political means.'
