President defends Mervyn at cabinet meeting
Thursday, 3 January 2008 - 5:21 PM SL Time

[03-01-2008 4.10pm] At yesterday`s (Jan. 02nd) cabinet meeting, President Mahinda Rajapaksa had strongly defended Minister Mervyn Silva over his preposterous behaviour at Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation.

Ministers discussed at length the unexpected treatment meted out by SLRC staff to their junior colleague after he stormed the state-run television station`s News Division and assaulted its News Director on the 27th of last month.

Minister John Seneviratne, who raised the matter, noted that it has had an adverse impact on the government`s image, and said that something has to be done to restrain Mervyn Silva.

Here, President Rajapaksa pointed out that since the SLFP Central Committee was to discuss the incident when it meets tonight, it should not be taken up at the cabinet meeting.

?Mervyn had not hit T.M.G. Chandrasekara (SLRC News Director) on the proper spot,? the president has reportedly said, in an attempt to justify the actions of the non cabinet Labour Minister.

This guy is dumber than the bull in your page that he is ploughing the paddy field.

Sorry bull. I didn't mean to insult you.

Unbelievable. Has Mervin got to kill someone to punish him.

Lalith aiya,

When these guys get away with blue murder, what would you expect?

This government will lose the little credibility that it has if no action is taken against Mervyn Silva. SLRC protest is an indication that the people's frustration lowly coming out.

Couple of incidents like this will seal the fate of these politicians. One cannot forever hide behind the war.

Bongs,

One cannot forever hide behind the war.

Here is a bit of Political History that Mahinda should wake up to.

In These guys are concentrating that the Victory over the LTTE terrorist will give them another victory at the ballots. No way. Here is what happened to Senior Bush in 1992 US election:

In 1991, the incumbent president, George Bush, was extremely popular after the Persian Gulf War. His approval rating was above 90 percent at one point in 1991 because his war had helped erase the Vietnam Syndrome America had felt since the 1960s. But because of a growing public perception of an economic downturn, Bush's popularity began falling throughout 1992. This opened the door for the campaign of independent candidate Ross Perot, who led most polls through May and then Clinton/Gore after Perot had faltered (by dropping out of the race and then re-entering and by selecting a Vice Presidential candidate (James Stockdale) many viewed as not ready for 'prime time'.

I think it was already confirmed that the President asked him to go, if the president does not support him it will come out that it was the Rajapakse clan that asked him to take with him the drug dealers and the murderers.

Lalith aiya,

Premadasa got rid of the JVP menace but thereafter became hugely unpopular. People forgot what type of hardship they went through.

Government should know that stomach fire (bada ginna) influences people more than multi-barrel fire. If LTTE is beaten, government's fall will be imminent beacue people will vote on cost of living, corruption and lawlessness (including state thuggery).
