J2K6,
I think Rt. Rev, Chickera's soft stance on Tigers have far reaching roots than the number of Tamils clergymen and lay parishioners present in his diocese. That is something I would rather discuss as a separate issue.
In case of Burma, the situation is far more complex than what appears from outside. To my knowledge, *oil* is also playing a key role in the present crisis. For example, most of Burma's oil and gas exports are sold to China and any regime change is likely to open that to the West as well. Not that I support China's backing to the Junta, but there is no point jumping to wild conclusions not assessing every aspect of it. Simply, the concerns certain parties have about Burma is not solely based on the gross violation human rights.

The award winning journalists in these newspapers question why Sri Lankan Bhikkus do not come in support of the Myanmar Bhikkus who are demonstrating against the military government. These journalists who objected to demonstrations by the Sri Lankan (Sinhala) Bhikkus against the LTTE want the Bhikkus to take to streets against the military government in Myanmar. Perhaps these journalists are of the opinion that the LTTE is better than the Myanmar military government.
But we hear no military leader in that country deriding the protesting Myanmar monks by asking whether demonstrations were the way to follow the Noble Eightfold Path.

Isn't anyone going to deride Myanmar Buddhist monks asking whether protesting against the govenment thereby involving themselves in politics complies with the Noble Eight Fold Path? :-) Edited By - GamaRaala - 3 Oct 2007 06:43:37 GMT |

Thanks for the insight mucha-linda. yes this could well be the cause for this sudden interest in the plight of the Burmese people. indeed there seems to be a kind of 'eliptical' or indirect criticism being leveled at China for being complacent on the junta. public appeals in the west for China to put pressure on the junta (as noted in the content of what many foreign ministers have said in the past week) , seem to me to be part of this agenda.
what other reasons do you have for why chickera is, lets say, 'unusually vocal' on the issue of idps, tamil grievances, hr etc? i dont recall kenneth being so anti-government. is it because chikera is pro unp? i dont know really. unlike the catholic church i cannot see any external pressure being applied on the sri lankan anglicans, so i am inclined to think this bias in chickera is more local.

Aritha_SPICE:
The show of solidarity of Sri Lanka's Anglican Bishop with the Buddhist clergy of Myanmar is indeed something which we should celebrate!
buddhidts are being hammered in LNP thisway and that way and every way.
Suddenly, you wanted to appear and talk about CELEBRATIONS. |

GAMA RAALA,
I asked the same question from our friend SHAKTI. However, given the stupidity of the statement issued by Rt. Rev. Duleep Chickera, he dare not to visit this thread again.
