Australia`s pace bowlers sent Sri Lanka crashing out of the World Twenty20 championships at Newlands Thursday.
Sri Lanka tumbled to 101 all out in 19.3 overs after being sent in.
Australian opening batsmen Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden needed only 10.2 overs to take their side racing to a ten-wicket win in a Super Eights match that was effectively a knock-out encounter.
Australia made sure of joining Pakistan in the semi-finals while Sri Lanka were eliminated.
Pakistan were due to play Bangladesh in the second match of a double-header. If Pakistan won they would top the group but a defeat would enable Australia to go ahead on net run rate.
The match was effectively decided in the first few overs after Gilchrist, Australia`s stand-in captain, won the toss.
Stuart Clark took four for 20, the best figures by an Australian bowler in Twenty20 internationals.
Clark built on early breakthroughs by Brett Lee and Nathan Bracken, who took advantage of early life in the pitch. The first three wickets fell for 11 runs in the first three overs.
Clark took over as Sri Lanka crashed to 43 for seven before Jehan Mubarak and Chaminda Vaas put on 40 for the eighth wicket.
Mubarak made top score of 28 before lofting a catch to extra cover off all-rounder Shane Watson, playing in his first match of the tournament.
But Watson had to leave the field after bowling two balls of his fourth over, clutching the left hamstring that had kept him out of action.
Watson replaced Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who was ruled out of the rest of the tournament because of a hamstring injury suffered during his team`s defeat against Pakistan in Johannesburg Tuesday.
Gilchrist and Hayden snuffed out any chance of Sri Lanka fighting their way back into the match with aggressive batting.
Hayden hit his third half-century of the tournament, making 58 not out off 38 balls with seven fours and two sixes.
Gilchrist was unbeaten on 31 off 25 balls.

Sri Lanka's batting was pathetic, completely outplayed by the Aussies, reaching the target without loss and in 10.2 overs show their class.
Once again Sanath failed our batting flopped.
Sri Lanka has to seriously consider in grooming a suitable replacement for Sanath, it is not easy to replace someone of his class but the time is up.

Sri lanka Dropped there most Experience Marvan and failed to fill that slot.
Lankan Coaches were Australian Openers but they failed to produce Consistent Openers.
Lanka will have the best when they play Test matches in Australia where Aussies will make new records against, not Muttiah breaks Warrens record.
Selectors should take responsibility for not locating the need All Rounders,Openers and Middle Order Batsman.
Lanka Still to find replacement for Muttiah and Vaas who will be retiring within few years.

fortunately I did nt watch the match, but the way they play in last few games i could see they are not giving 100%.
May be they go to strip clubs in the night or some internal problems.

It was a pathetic batting display with even Sangakkara throwing his bat like some one drugged. Only the Pakistanis could have batted the way the Sri Lankans batted. The Pakis are known to throw matches away for a fistful of dollars. I was wondering whether our batsmen with the exception of Sanath and Mubarak were offerred citizenship by the Aussies. Tough luck that Sanath should have become the victim of a bad decision. |

Damed,
Yes you are right.
Our top order is exposed to the new ball so early when the openers fail.
Those days we had the ever-reliable Aravinda, to hold the innings together and it should be Mahela who should do an Aravinda for Sri Lanka now.
It will be not a bad idea to experiment Chamara or Dilshan as an opener in the ODIs and slot Upul in the middle order.

still we not not ready for 20/20 game. we have to go a long way, it should start from school cricket, then to club level.
I think the biggest problem with our players is low confidence level. They have the skill but they dont have toughness to face a challenge. that is where selectors made mistake giving prority to skill without proper evaluation of mental condition.

Duminda,
Even though our boys are new to Twenty20 they did better when compared to the pioneers England and South Africa, where in both these countries the game is played a lot.
Whether the game will gain popularity is yet to be seen, but no doubt it's a crowd puller and then this format is not to the liking of many reputed players.
Test Cricket and One Dayers are the ultimate, and it will be a total disaster to encourage the Twenty20 at school level maybe from Club level.

I think you are an old school cricket guy, but belive me Test matches are already dead and one day also slowly dying. I think even 20/20 also too much in another 5 years time. best is 15/15 game with two innings.
Any game is for the crowd not for books, if no crowd, game has no meaning.
