This is nothing more than Tradition and Custom .. Nothing very much to be 'read' into it.

If he is going to be 'success-full' as an MP .. he will have to remain 'focused', and attend to those 'public' duties expected of him ..

Showing the 'new' MP with budhist-priests 'around' him .. is a 'cheap shot'

Because of Monks: will Buddhist of tomorrow be seen as the radical Muslims of today?

This is not just in SL. Look at all the countries in Asia where Buddhism has a greater say.

It is the priest-hood (monks), who've carried the 'ideals' of budhism forward .. these many years. They did that by remaining 'fast' to the Teaching .. and the teaching was of 'renunciation'.

In getting involved in trying to 'sort-out' problems faced by lay-folk (as in Sri Lanka, with the JHU monks) .. they do 'injure' the Teaching. I do hope budhist monks remove themselves from 'parliamentary' participation by the earliest possible date .. JHU could carry-on, but the priests should remain as advisors and counselors to 'lay-men', who could say their 'piece' in parliament.

(If budhists, and budhism come under 'pressure' of other religions .. you may expect a corresponding 'militancy' to arise among 'budhists' .. that is to be expected. But 'Budhism' does not have in it the 'sharia' law .. or the 'idea' within it .. all those 'outside' the 'budhist-fold' are for-ever 'damned' .. are intrinsically 'worth-less' and even killing them is no 'offence' to God. More simply .. there is no 'God' in budhism).

When is Rajapakse Son coming to politics? Maybe he'll get Ministry of education and Youth as soon as he enters. Or even Cheif of the Navy!

Rajapakse Bro's continue their party! Mahinda Chintana!

In one sentence you have almost said what Buddhism is all about. Do you see this in todays environment? I as a outsider don't.

For me Buddhism is not a religion it is a way of life. A person from any other religion can still practice this way of life without carrying a label.

I don't believe that any religion could be destroyed from out side as much as it could be destroyed from within.

If you look at history many religious leaders have stood-up against social injustice and quite a few had lost their lives but their actions had brought integrity to the faith. I don't see this at least from those who are taking the headlines.
