This surprises me. You read the garbage on AT and think its a news or opinion worthy paper.
I go through it some times for entertainment value. Makes me laugh. |

I am not going to go through the total blah! blah on what you wrote
I 'gave' you 'blah', blah', 'blah' .. because you thought .. there was nothing much I could say. (If you were taken a'back .. I am happy about it).
As an ex- air force officer, I remember a British secondee from the RAF (then Base Commander Katunayake), having a good natured laugh, and saying 'So .. how can you teach Chemistry and Biology in Sinhala ? Do you have words for all these terms ? Or will it be the English-word with '-eka' at its end ? And you hope to have Doctors and Engineers taught & trained via the Sinhala-stream ?
It seemed difficult then .. however, over the years 'good' men .. competent Doctors, Engineers and other people in scientific disciplines have come thro' our Universities & Medical Colleges. It is not a 'minute' sliver of the population, versed in English that can 'make' it to the higher professions .. un-like former times. That was what I was trying to get through to you (and any-one else who may have cared to go thro' what I wrote).
As regards importance of English in IT .. that is obvious. The 'software' is mostly written in English .. that is because the biggest 'market' is in USA, and most of the related innovations were also from the US. (Even Germans, Chinese, Japanese .. find they are dis-advantaged without English in this particular field .. but their advancement in the scientific/technological area is not compromised due to primary and university level education proceeding in the mother-tongue).

He fills the vacancy of late Minister of Irrigation Anver Ismail who belonged to the Athavulla Faction of the Muslim Congress.
This govt has no regard for minorities... A Muslim MP died...so his seat must be filled with a Muslim... or at least some one from the East... This is a govt of the morons, by the morons, and for the morons!

Eelamaya,
I am not going to write about the political implications of this appointment..I heard that the appointment was made with the full blessings of Mr. Athaulla..Anyway, now the anti GOSL people and the UNP will shout about it saying it is nurturing the Rajapaksha Bros. Company..and those grumblings are normal in this political scenario..
But what I see in this appointment is something else..
As you may know, Basil is a top ranker when it come to negotiations and dealing with rival factions..He is respected for his PR skills even among his rivals..So, the GOSL will gain much from he being in the Parliament..because he then gets the parliamentary privilledges in his future dealings..And in the future, the GOSl will be needing massive support from the opposition as well..there will be the GOSL political solution package..and there will be huge debates..hatred..mud slinging..accusations..threats..and so on and so forth..
So, I guess Basil being an MP and possibly a Minister at the next reshuffle, will have more access to MPs in Parliament..
This is what I see..
PS:
And I am sure the LTTE knows this too..And I wouldn't be surprised, if the LTTE hit list has Basil on top pushing MR to the second place...!!He will be that crucial in the future..and the LTTE will do anything to stop the political package coming through..
