Presidential Senior Advisor Basil Rajapakse is nominated to Parliament. He is due to take oaths as an MP in Parliament tomorrow morning.
Mr. Rajapakse, who held the General Secretary post of the SLFP Youth Organisation in 1979, worked dedicatedly to build the party. He rendered valuable service to set up youth organisations islandwide. Basil Rajapakse was appointed as Deputy Secretary of the SLFP Executive Committee in 1980.
Thereafter, he handled the election campaign for the victory of Mahinda Rajapakse and Chamal Rajapakse in the parliamentary elections held in the midst of the fear psychosis in 1989. At the 1994 decisive general election, he discharged a major task in the Hambantota District helping Mahinda Rajapakse to secure the highest preferences in the Hambantota District. Chamal Rajapakse, Nirupama Rajapakse and Mahinda Amaraweera were also elected to parliament. He also supported the victory of Chandrika Kumaratunge at the 1999 December presidential polls.
Meanwhile, Minister Susil Premajayanth, who is the General Secretary of the United People?s Freedom Alliance had intimated in writing to the Elections Commissioner about the appointment. The related gazette notification will be out today. The services discharged by Mr. Rajapakse on behalf of the President in resettlement and development in the North and East are priceless. He is also the main pilot of the ?Jathika Saviya Gama Neguma? programme targeted at developing 14,000 villages.
