Basil to parliament from the national list
Tuesday, 18 September 2007 - 8:43 PM SL Time

The Secretary of the ruling United People`s Freedom Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Susil Prema Jayantha today informed the Elections Commissioner and the Parliamentary Secretary in writing that the President Mahinda Rajapakse`s brother Basil Rajapakse was appointed as a MP of the national list.

Basil was to participate in the meeting of the government parliamentary group this evening as a MP.

He fills the vacancy of late Minister of Irrigation Anver Ismail who belonged to the Athavulla Faction of the Muslim Congress. The UPFA Secretary has powers to appoint anyone to fill a vacancy of a MP since Athavulla Faction contested the 2004 election as a party of the UPFA.

`Lanka-e-News` broke the news on September 14 that Basil Rajapakse would be appointed as a MP. The report further said that the SLFP Secretary Maithripala Sirisena opposed the appointment since it would prove the allegations over a rule off a Rajapakse Brothers Company.

Enlightened minister Dilan Perera.
We all know that ultimately war brings no victories.

Jawaharlal Nehru had vision and courage to solve the Tamil Nadu issue at the very beginning. A group in South India wanted a separate homeland. Nehru gave them a power sharing mechanism and called it Tamil Nadu but stopped short of giving a separate state. This gave those with separatist sentiments to claim that they won their Tamil Nadu and Nehru was able to say that he prevented separatism by recognising their political aspirations thus giving both sides a win win situation.

We need such courageous decisions to be taken and the APRC is the place to take those decisions.

Hurray

Mr. 10% , now can claim 50 % as commission. This President who came to power with the assistance of terrorist leader VP and as such without a clear mandate , behaves like as if Sri Lanka is his inheritance from his parents

No president has abused his power in such a low manner.

Gamiya will be very happy

Whoever the Minister, it is best to get the irrigation functioning well.

Need to get the Tanks repaired, canals repaired and new canals built.

There are new techniques to build canal banks using low cost material, that last for 100 of years (i.e. mesh technology).

However, irrigation does not mean canals and tanks only.

Now 'Drip Irrigation System' hails as one of the most effective for dry-zones.

It would be best to provide a huge BOI incentive for a company or two to set-up Drip Irrigation equipment manufacturing plants for local market for an affordable price for the masses.

In addition, Hydroponic growing should also be encouraged to get the maximum use from space.

Rs. 290,000 a night per suite

The Sri Lankan delegation is scheduled to reside at the expensive Ritz Carlton Hotel where a suite is priced at US$ 2,500 (Rs. 290,000) per night. While the suites are reserved for the President, first Lady and the ministerial delegation, even the hangers on will create a large dent on the country's exchequer with an ordinary room for the ordinary folk with bed and breakfast sold at a pricy US$740 per night. That is approximately Rs. 85,000 per night.

Nirupam,

Why can not you stick to the topic in discussion, at least in the first page?

Yes. This is the ideal solution to dry areas of SL. Dept of Agriculture should promote this vigorously. I am not sure if Basil will have any interest because this is low cost.
