Basil to parliament from the national list

(LeN- 2007 Sep. 17, 11.45 PM) The Secretary of the ruling United People`s Freedom Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Susil Prema Jayantha today informed the Elections Commissioner and the Parliamentary Secretary in writing that the President Mahinda Rajapakse`s brother Basil Rajapakse was appointed as a MP of the national list.

Basil was to participate in the meeting of the government parliamentary group this evening as a MP.

He fills the vacancy of late Minister of Irrigation Anver Ismail who belonged to the Athavulla Faction of the Muslim Congress. The UPFA Secretary has powers to appoint anyone to fill a vacancy of a MP since Athavulla Faction contested the 2004 election as a party of the UPFA.

`Lanka-e-News` broke the news on September 14 that Basil Rajapakse would be appointed as a MP. The report further said that the SLFP Secretary Maithripala Sirisena opposed the appointment since it would prove the allegations over a rule off a Rajapakse Brothers Company.

Basil to be sworn-in as national list MP

Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa is to be sworn in as a national list MP this week to fill the vacancy created by the demise of Irrigation Minister Anwer Ismail.

Political sources told the Daily Mirror last evening that the swearing in was likely to take place today or tomorrow. Mr. Rajapaksa who is the brother of President Mahinda Rajapksa, is tipped to be appointed as the Cabinet Minister of Nation Building soon.

The portfolio is now being held by the President. However, subject matters coming under the purview of the Ministry are overseen by Basil Rajapaksa. There are five other non-Cabinet Ministers for National Building today.

UPFA Secretary and Education Minister Susil Premajayantha has already been requested to nominate the name of Basil Rajapaksa as an MP to the Elections Commissioner. However, the Commissioner had not received the nomination letter by the time this edition went to press yesterday.

It is learnt that Mr. Basil Rajapaksa had told his close associates that he would get an ample chance to counter allegations regarding handing over money to the LTTE, when the matter is taken up for debate in Parliament on Thursday.
