The President`s Office yesterday apologized to the members of the Sri Lanka delegation led by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and the Indian officials over a statement to the media on the setting up of an Indo-Lanka committee of high officials on defence related matters.
Contradicting his earlier statement, Presidential Secretariat (PRIU)Policy Research & Information Unit Director Lucien Rajakarunanayake, in a fresh statement yesterday, said there were no decisions to set up a new Indo-Lanka High Level Committee on Defence during the delegation`s visit to India recently.
`The PRIU regrets this error and apologizes to the members of the Sri Lanka delegation and the Indian officials they had discussions with, and to the media in this regard,` Mr. Rajakarunanayake said yesterday.
`The PRIU is informed that there was no decision among those who participated in these discussions to establish an Indo-Lanka High Level Committee on Defence as stated in our report, which was based on an incorrect interpretation of information,` the statement added.
This comes despite the Indian External Affairs Ministry`s statement to the media that it had no information about the setting up of such a committee between the two neighbouring countries.
Issuing a statement, the PRIU on Thursday said, `the establishment of this committee is the outcome of the discussions the Sri Lankan delegation held with their counterparts in New Delhi on September 3 ? 4.`
The composition of the Committee is as follows: Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Senior Advisor to the President Basil Rajapaksa (Sri Lanka) and Defence Secretary Shri Vijay Singh, External Affairs Secretary Shivshankar Menon and National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan (India), Thursday`s statement said.
Following the Sri Lankan statement, India`s Foreign Office spokesperson Navtej Sarna told the media, `The interaction was part of a regular exchange of visits between officials of both countries. Sri Lanka and India enjoyed extremely close relations and therefore frequently exchanged views on a wide range of issues.`
The Hindu newspaper, also quoting a senior official in the Indian High Commission, maintained that no new defence committee was formed. `A wide range of issues of mutual concern figured in the course of the interaction. Matters related to the ongoing defence cooperation between the two countries were part of the discussion but no new committee was constituted,` the newspaper said quoting the official.
India has so far not replied to repeated Sri Lankan requests for a defence agreement. But a few months ago, India provided non-lethal military equipment to Sri Lanka.

| This is not a strange situation. Many in outside does not like to see the defeat of the LTTE.For the Indian government, they have to satisfy the TamilNadu politicians. So they just keep away from military matters in public. |

Rajakarunanayake is a shame to the profession of journalism. All he has is an acid tongue for the UNP and a longer one to kiss ass of the PA Govt, especially MR.
Now that 2 brothers are MP's we'll wait to see when Gota will get his. Green card holders are running the govt, but Lal Kantha of JVP said on TV yesterday that the public and govt are both running to the Supremem Court for decisions (gas prices, school admissions etc) and this shows that there actually no governement in the land capable of making decisions. |
