'Pirith' is a re-counting of the manifold virtues of the Budha .. To the highly literate monks who compiled these hymns (there are also some similarities to the 'musicology' associated with 'Gregorian Hymns'), Budha's virtues are limit-less, and they (the priests who 'composed' the 'prith-verse'), were such distinguished literati .. that they had the ability to match the melli-fluous phonetics to the langauage (Pali). 'Maha Piritha' is indeed very long .. without repetition, it could go on for 6 or more hours. Commenced at say, 8.00 pm it could 'go on' thro' the night, and may not end till 6.00 am the following morning.
(Recitation of Pirith is 'held' (believed), by many budhists, to cause/bring about 'blessings' to a person/s or to a house-hold, where the recitation takes place).

'Angulimala Piritha' is chanted for mother's who are about to deliver baby. Do you know any particular reason for that?

TamilNet, Saturday, 08 September 2007, 13:42 GMT
The Office of the LTTE Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs, in a detailed report released Saturday before UN Human Rights Council session, drew attention to the human rights violations committed by the Sri Lanka State on the Tamil people, and said that more than 1974 Tamil civilians have been killed and 842 Tamil civilians were either arrested or abducted in the 21 months from November 2005 after Sri Lanka's President Rajapakse came to power. The Rights Group called upon the 'international and UN representatives who visit Colombo, to also pay a visit to the Tamil homeland and to find out first hand the ground situation.'
According to LTTE figures (a self procalamied Terrorist Organization), Only about 2500 civilians have either disappeared or been killed.

The thread is about Night Club Brawl but the discussion is about religion
It is a very delicate issue and the least we can do is respect all religion and peoples belief and move on.. |
