I have already contacted MP of Bibile and few provincial council members. They are going to visit the family this weekend and assured fullest support to build a house for this family.
If other members agree, we can send this money directly to provincial council member of that village. :-)
I might as well put the money into a bottomless pitt:):)

Mr Brown & Lalith
Its great to see the final figure, I am sure you are streetwise and know the problems. Whatever you do, keep the politicians out of this, apart from that good luck to you.
I am involved in a charity, where we make sure no politician is involved, we have a team of reliable guys in SL who have to report to us on every penny/cent spent, that way accountability and transparency becomes the most important thing. We have done it for over ten years, works like magic every time we do a project, mainly to do with education and schools. |

In my prospective, too many cooks will spoil the soup.
So please let Lalith Ayya handle this project.
We all know how the things happen in Sri Lanka. I am not in favor of getting any politician into this scene. At least a Pradeshiya Sabha man,....
I would like this to go as a LNP Project.
At the same time, we should secure there lives, as the others might get jealous of them of having such a donation from us. People kill each other just for 50 rupees. Yes, It's in Sri Lanka....
I have some grave concerns about the press too. At any time any given politician can come and put his mane/picture into the project.
We don't know whether we can prevent that or not, but I think the best thing is to educate the family and keep those politicians away from this.
I have no faith on Sri Lankan politicians and certain government officers. Period. |

LalithS,
Thanks for the acknowledgement.
Guys,
With regard to the idea of getting something really good for the family, there is something in my humble opinion that we need to pay attention to.
This situation arose a few times during the tsunami rehabilitation projects.
People who were not affected by the tsunami sometimes took offence to the tsunami victims getting aid and new things that were sometimes better than what they themselves had.
Also note that this family consists of a blind mother and kids. Not exactly people who can defend themselves
Maybe I am totally out of line saying that, and maybe the villagers living around might be really decent people who will only be happy for what this family will gain.
But I think it might be a better idea to give them the basic nessecities and invest the rest,(as some of you have already stated) into educating the kids.
Of course we don't have enough yet to buy them a luxury place , but you guys know what I mean.
With regard to the Politician who wants to help, maybe we can be diplomatic and explain to him that we do not want any political involvment but that he is more than welcome to contribute as a private citizen.
That way we might save some bad air being created which we really don't need.

Guys & Ruwani,
All my young life I was upcountry. I studied in Bandarawela & Gurutalawa. I was in the dorms all my
school life. So every 3 months it was up and down to the hills.
I have been to Bibile. I had class mates there. Former UNP MP for Homagama Gamini Jayasuriya's family is there. So if I need help it is there. But I don't want to get these busy people involved. They are busy people.

I have contributed a small amount and read others' comments silently, two absurd things I have noticed from members comments.
1) Involving a local politician into this good cause.
2) Involving self-centered, attention seeking, 'front seat' offering a generous member.
So, I like to comment on these!
1) I hate politicians. PERIOD! Laliths could do a better job than these morons politicians.
2) I don't like Ruwani1/2/3/4 or any numeric indicator is involving in this good cause. I have the wonderful opportunity to read her comments on poorer and underprivileged people. After those 'educated' comments, I think she is a worse person in this forum, ever could come close to this unfortunate family. If anybody try to involve her in this good cause (visiting the family in person), this would be the last time I have helped someone through LNP.
In my experience, some people should have to be left alone! |
