Pro-LTTE elements are making subtle moves to stop exhibiting the anti-Tiger movie, 'Prabhakaran,' directed by Thushara Pieris. The film's producer is Osmund Silva, a Sri Lankan resident in Italy.
Already, he has received all kinds of threats for making this movie.
Tiger sympathizers have used an unnamed Europe-based LTTE 'front' to attempt to buy 'Prabhakaran' for which they have offered a fabulous sum, according to Thushara. Their real motive however is to prevent public screenings of the film, he has told the Sinhala weekly, Meewitha.
But there is a deafening silence on the part of the so-called Free Media Movement, the Sinhala 'Pongu Thamil' artistes, and those who screamed from the roof tops when the government imposed a ban on 'Aksharaya' and delayed the exhibition of 'Pura Handa Kaluwara.'
Thushara will not sell the film to any company.
'Prabhakaran' - a devastating psychological attack on the Wanni Tigers ? is based on the experience of a would-be suicide cadre who revealed his story to Thusahara Pieris after feeling Sri Lanka to Italy , where the latter is studying in a cinema school in Rome. The movie's cast includes a number of former LTTE child soldier since it is the story of a child combatant, named 'Prabhakaran.'
The film exposes how the Wanni Tiger leadership has misled Tamil child soldiers and youth to sacrifice their lives for Velupillai Prabhakaran's megalomania.
Says Thushara: I spoke to several LTTE cadres who want to disassociate themselves from Tiger objectives. They don't war and they have now understood that Prabhakaran and the top leaders have completely misled the lower ranks. I therefore did this film not from a Sinhala point of view but rather from the angle from which the Tiger leaders are seen from within that organization.
The movie was shot during the Thoppigala battle on location in the villages of Welikanda, Nelum Wewa and a village near Morawewa. There, during the making of one particular scene which showed the LTTE destroying the village, some mothers had begun crying when the film's shooting was in progress since it reminded them of the massacre of around 50 people by the Tigers in the very same hamlet several years ago.
Speaking on the numerous threats he has received for making this film, Thusahara said that he was well aware of the risk when he undertook to direct the movie.
'I will never be a traitor to my country. I did not do this film with NGO funds. I am a product of free education system. Public money (taxes) was spent on my education. I do not want to make money by making films to betray the country. Had I done a film with NGO funds (showing the Tigers in a favourable light or discrediting the Sri Lankan Armed Forces) there would have been a grand welcome for me.'
'I did the shooting under utmost secrecy. Without the dedication of Defence Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka, Majors General Daya Ratnayaka and Tissa Jayawardena, Brigadier Upul Withanage and all military personnel in Welikanda and Punani camps this film could have never been made.'
Dasun Madusanka plays the role of the child soldier Prabhakaran ? the main character. The cast includes Priyankara Ratnayaka, Anuruddhika Padukkage, Sarath Dikkumbura and Darshan Dharmaraja.
