In order to help these people, you need someone local who can contact these people. Then you can open an account at the nearest people's bank or BOC and transfer some money. Arrange a standing order to release money on monthly basis. That would take care of the immediate need. I dont think this lady is blind. Perhaps very poor eye sight which can be treated. That would be a bigger help than anything else. Unfortunately, SL is full of such people. Even more ironic thing is that SL has richer people than you and I can imagine. Which one of us has an aston martin?

Onesri,
You have got a point.
It is true that,if you have to make real change in hundreds of thousands of families like this one,the society should be changed.
But for that to happen, the country should be governed by statesmen and not by corrupt politicians, you find in the Island.
This family cannot afford to waite till that change comes.
Some thing should be done NOW.
That could be esily done by people living abroad.
So,shall we do the easiest and the feasible thing now?

Thanks for the good response to this.
Forget about world poverty. Focus on ONE problem at a time.
Problem: 5 people need a house BADLY and money to jump start thier life.
Solution: We need to locate this family and see if they are still in the same needs as when this video was made.
First Step: I have requested a contact in SL to locate this family. Once I get an update I will do another post. If any member here has means in SL to locate this family let me know.
Second Step: Get an org involved to get things done. Once good one seem to be http://www.habitat.org/intl/ap/191.aspx (Thanks GG)

| Mr. Brown thaxs for posting this. I bet there are thousands of families like these in north, east and south of the country who live in extreme poverty. And i'm happy to see all Sinhala and tamil LNP members agree on one thing and taking measures to help families like this. If anyone can come up with an honest way to help this family, I would be happy to contribute. First this family needs a proper place to live. A small secured mud hut/house. I'm strong believer of microfinance to help families like these. Microfinance is a necessary input to poverty reduction but by no means sufficient. Since money is loaned, not given. Repayment is expected. It places the responsibility, freedom and self-advancement on the borrower, rather than just living off donations. |
