The government has spent a staggering Rs. 56 million out of public funds for the Presidential entourage of 192 members who visited China from February 27 to March 4, 2007 on an official tour.

This shocking disclosure was made to Parliament by Chief Government Whip Jeyaraj Fernandopulle yesterday in response to an oral question raised by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake.According to the answer which was tabled in the House, Rs. 27 million of this amount had been obtained from the Presidential allocation, one million rupees from the Export Development Board, Rs. 867, 582 from the Sri Lanka Tourist Board and two million rupees from the Board of Investment. The total air fare of the tour was Rs. 24 million.

Among the delegation that visited China were 16 Ministers, 60 officials including media and security personnel, six chefs and three representatives from the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. There were 12 members in the Buddhist delegation and 54 in the business team.

Responding to MP Karunanayake`s question about agreements with the Chinese authorities,

the government revealed in the tabled answer that eight agreements were sealed during the tour.

The agreement on Economic and Technical Co-operation between China and Sri Lanka and the MoU between the Chinese Ministry of Construction and the Sri Lankan Ministry of Urban and Sacred Area Development are two of them.

An agreement had been signed to establish a `Friendship City Relationship` between Hambantota and the Chinese city of Guangzhoue.

Besides, China had agreed to grant financial assistance for the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant, the Hambantota development project and to supply 100 railway carriages and 15 multiple diesel engines.
