VAVUNIYA, Sri Lanka (AP) -- Hundreds of ethnic Sinhalese civilians fled three villages in northern Sri Lanka on Tuesday, claiming the government had failed to protect them from attacks by Tamil Tiger rebels, locals said.
About 350 men, women and children fled the small villages in Vavuniya district and sought shelter at a school, village head G. Premasiri said.
`There were many attacks on our villages and we repeatedly asked the government to strengthen the security. Since there was no action we decided to leave our homes to protect our children,` said G. U. Gnanasena, a 70-year-old farmer.
He said the village was protected by `home patrols` made up of locals but at least nine of them have been killed in the past two months by rebels. The villagers requested army protection but the authorities have not responded, he said.
Vavuniya is an ethnic Tamil-majority district in northern Sri Lanka and there are many Sinhalese villages on its southern parts. Some areas in the northern part are under Tamil Tiger rebels.
Military spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe said police and army personnel were sent to the villages on Tuesday, but did not report that civilians had left.
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebels have fought the government since 1983 to create a separate homeland for ethnic minority Tamils who have suffered discrimination from Sinhalese-majority governments.

This would be a good point for all. Good opportunity to the eelamists to show that sinhala people are undergoing the threats of terrorists.
Now what do you ( extremists) say?
Will see how those LTTE supporters comment on this matter.

LOL!! Another planned act of GOSL :):) The so called sinhala villages are under military control so far...then how come LTTE attack the villagers? That means the military is soooooooo weak. LOL!!.
If the case is true, then this must be the work of either Karuna or GOSL. |

350 men, women and children fled
unfortunate, but fact remains: GOSL, LTTE and Muslim homeguards have all taken part in ethnic cleansing, chasing out tens of thousands of civilians from their original homes
now over to the hooters... |

Colombo POPULATION: Majority are TAMILS and MUSLIMS. Sinhalese are the 3rd. But all live in peace and harmony. Nothing wrong with it - anybody should be able to live anywhere regardless of the ethnic background. Colombo is the best example in Sri Lanka.
LTTE is using couple of incidents in the past to misguide the Tamil dispora and earn money to live in luxury while putting innocent Tamils in danger.

After the East the SLAF is getting ready to attck the North.
The army is getting ready to open a new front in Vavunia by sending the Sinhala villagers to safer areas. Army recruitment is also going at top gear in readiness to attack Timers.
The Army in a drive to recruit 30,000 youth during the year has recruited a record number of youth within the first half of the year, a top military official said.?Some 19,000 youths have been recruited by the Army so far this year,? Military Spokesman Prasad Samarasinghe told the Daily Mirror yesterday |

Military is every where in Colombo. But, LTTE blew up so many times including a w-blown off LTTE woman in the SLA HQ.
On the other hand, LTTE could not hold on to EAST or could not catch Trincomalle or Jaffna.
What do you say ?.

They say 350, but there are at least 350,000 Tamils who are homeless, some for decades.
The tigers end up killing these home guards and such as they move into government controlled territory, as recent stories have shown they are heavily infiltrating government areas.
So its not targeted at these villagers per se, but they need to breach the weakest points.
Would you get in through a poorly defended village, or over SLA defended FDLS... |

Another planned act of GOSL :):)
this is the way of real terrorists..
If Tamils were attacked then it was done by SLA
If Sinhalese were attacked then it was a planned attack by the GOSL.
What a ridiculous statement. Those are really brainwashed supporters of LTTE. They do think only the Tamils in NE . that is their life. Foolish thugs. |

| Sinhala villagers are sent away for safety. Any fool knows that the govt ministyers are making speeches after speeches making it clear that they are getting ready to attack North to defeat Tigers. It is also published that the army is bombing Vanni on daily basis. Then they want to protect Sinhalese villagers from getting caught in the cross fire. |
