Some of them are underground and are linked through underground trenches.
Vanni is littered with booby trapped huge pits... entire SLA regiment can be buried instantly in there. Thats what happened in Muhamalai... often SLA cannot count the causalities because they get buried instantly when they fall into those pits!
In fact Vanni is like a black-hole for SLA!
