The SLAF yesterday bombed an LTTE training facility situated north-west of Oddusudan as the government stepped-up pressure on enemy-held territory in the Vanni.
Jets launched from Katunayake airbase targeted the facility twice in the morning, SLAF spokesperson Group Captain Ajantha Silva said. `We carried out the first strike at 9. 10 am and the second, around noon,` he said, asserting that the assault was successful.
Both Israeli-built Kfirs and Ukrainian MiG 27s had been deployed in what the official called one of the biggest strikes since the government brought the entire Eastern Province under its control. The SLA secured the last LTTE bastion in the East on July 11.
The official said that the targeted base had held several hundred cadres. Another official speculated that the dead and the wounded would have included many recently recruited cadres or even civilians who had been forced to undergo training.
Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said that the LTTE had launched a special programme to train civilians.
`All families, depending on the number of members are forced to take part in the two-
hour programme on a daily basis,` he said. According to him people between 15 and 45 years of age are forced to undergo training. He asserted that this was part of the enemy`s counter measures to resist a possible army advance into their territory.
In response to questions, Samarasinghe pointed out that the LTTE was engaged in a desperate effort to beef up their defences in the general area west of Omanthai and east of Madhu. According to him there had been several confrontations between the SLA and the LTTE in the general area east of Madhu last Tuesday and Wednesday. The SLA based at Uyilankulam and Parappakandal engaged enemy units on three occasions.
Contrary to the general belief that the SLA had launched operations in the Vanni in the immediate aftermath of the recapture of Thoppigala, offensive action got underway in March. In fact, the SLA had shifted the elite Special Forces troops to spearhead the action north-west of Vavuniya.
Army Chief Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka, in a recent interview with The Island said, the LTTE had suffered considerable losses during engagements in the area. He placed the number of SLA killed at 90. This was before the LTTE triggered a claymore mine blast at Cheddikulam on the Mannar-Medawachchiya last Tuesday. The blast killed 12 soldiers.
The SLA had deployed sizeable assets to continue with the operations. Since the SLA launched operations, the LTTE had mounted a devastating counter attack. Despite the setback, the SLA had continued its operations in the area north west of Vavuniya.

Some where else it said that most of the SLa casualties are because of LTTE artillary.
So, RanilW is responsible for letting those Artillary pieces to be imported. |

This is the final countdown against the enimies of humanity.
you mean teh MR and CO ?
The United States yesterday stressed on the need for peace in Sri Lanka and human rights protection which has deteriorated since the resumption of hostilities. Deputy US Human Rights, Democracy and Labour Assistant Secretary Jeffrey Krilla told the Daily Mirror the Bush administration was looking for ways to build human rights capacity and support increasing staffing and activities for the Colombo office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. ?THE US GOVERNMENT IS ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT REPORTS OF DISAPPEARANCES AND THE LARGE NUMBER OF INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS,? Mr. Krilla said adding that there were numerous reports that paramilitary groups linked to government security forces participated in armed attacks, some against civilians.
