President lauds forces, pledges polls in the East
Friday, 20 July 2007 - 6:34 AM SL Time

President Mahinda Rajapakse yesterday announced that Provincial Council and Local Government elections in the East will be held before the end of this year.
Addressing the `Negenahira Navodaya` celebrations, at Independence Square, where he paid tribute the security forces for capturing Thoppigala, the last bastion of the LTTE in the East, the President said `The civic rights of the people of the East were usurped for 15 years. We are returning the usurped rights of these people by holding the Provincial and Local Government elections. We will give the people of the East their sovereign right to elect their representatives. Those who engaged in election malpractices throughout history will shout this time too.`

Referring to Ceasefire Agreement signed by the UNP Government in 2002 with the LTTE, the President said there was no country other than Sri Lanka where the criminal act of conceding a legal area of control to terrorists has been implemented.

`That is not all. The East was considered the least developed region in our country. By being subject to the forces of terror, the fertile lands of the East and its enterprising people were handicapped both economically and socially. They were disadvantaged politically and culturally, too. Our children who covered their heads with `hijab` or placed a `pottu` on their forehead as well as Sinhala children were deprived of their education`, the President said.

Referring to the elections to be held this year he said that in addition to the right to vote the day is not far when the Eastern Province would prosper with more electricity, highways, buses, hospitals and new industries.

On the Thoppigala victory, the President said that it was the symbol of the aspirations and determination of the people who truly loved the motherland.

The people who speak the Tamil language, he said, knew that they value peace more than a war waged even on the most reasonable grounds. The President expressed his deepest regrets for the tearful history that was thrust upon the Tamils and added that it was with deep emotion he accepted the great responsibility for the future of the Tamil speaking people and their children.

`As much as the new dawn in East lights up the lives of the innocent people of the East, I am convinced that this light would cause the historic brotherhood among the Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims to sprout fresh roots and thrive.` Rajapakse called on the people to resolve to live together in unity and fraternity among all races and religions.

Making a hard-hitting statement, he added, ?War rhetoric at such ceremonies will not promote harmony. In fact they only add insult to injury to the Tamils by giving the impression that they are a conquered people. Blowing one?s trumpet to a captive southern audience won?t help unite the country. Why have a national event and choose an address to the nation to score political brownie points? ?

Finally Hakim is making sense...!

GOSL is adding insult to injury through these parades...!

What would they do when East falls back to Tigers, one day?
