Gayan and Dinesh steal the thunder

Gayan Sandaruwan and Dinesh Deheragoda took all honours at the 4th annual Gunners Super Cross at Minneriya yesterday. Both of them won a double each.
Gayan Sandaruwan showed that he is a rider at the highest level. First he won the racing event with much difficulty.
In the first lap, Tuan Ossen fell off and Gayan could not move on. With this incident he was right behind losing around two minutes. Pasindu Pieris was going well in front. Gayan caught up with the leader and reduced the lead to around ten metres from Peiris coming into the final lap.
In the main jump Gayan moved ahead of Pieris and stretched the lead but coming towards the final stage once again his machine stopped and Pieris closed the gap making it a ding-dong battle.
Finally it was Gayan who received the chequered flag first amidst the cheering of all spectators for a top class race completed by him.
The second race was completely dominated by Gayan from the word go and managed to finish with nearly 300 metres ahead of other riders. This race saw the skill of Gayan come to good effect in all departments.
The victory not only added full points to him but also made him the champion rider of the day to receive the Gunners Super Cross Championship Trophy.
The Super Car event saw another battle between the best drivers in this class where Aravinda Premadasa, Nalin D. Perera, Reyaz Farook, Dinesh Deheragoda and Dinesh Jayawardene. It was Deheragoda who stole the limelight winning the event.
In the early stage of the race it was a close tussle between Aravinda, Nalin and Reyaz making every effort to get closer to Deheragoda who was the race leader. Deheragoda completed the race comfortably.
The second event for the same class once again saw Deheragoda who held the pole position become the race leader from the time he received the orders to go. He kept on increasing the lead and made a comfortable victory ahead of Dinesh Jayawardene and Reyaz Farook.
These two victories added points for the championship title for the year 2007 and also brought him the days championship award. Deheragoda was in superb control of his Mitsubishi Evo IX on this day.
It was Dinesh Jayawardene also behind the wheel of Mitsubishi that posed a threat to Deheragoda making it a Mitsubishis battle between.
The motorcycle event for kids under 10 too became a treat for the spectators as these young riders controlled their machines well and with courage to go over all obstacles without any mishap.
Yuhan Rajith Silva who went off the track with his bike had to be rushed to hospital for treatment and did not return until the finish. Pasindu Pieris formerly a rider who took up driving in addition was at his best competing three motorcycle events and three car events making it six events.
