as i said yes the system will not be the same as those days due to war and most of the kids have gone abroad..I was talking about the 70's when this system was introduced..Pls note something that is significant..This system was introduced before LTTE or any war in the country
To be frank the objective was to restrict the Tamil student entering university.. |

That is very TRUE (not cos he is my relative) but that is after the WAR..
I was not happy with the system before the WAR or LTTE!
I do not think anyone expect Tamil students to be the same during this war..just imagine living under constant threat of an attack and there will a drop in standards..I am sure even sinhalese people will agree on that.. |

Re the selection system to Uni's - the answer to your Q whether the best should enter should be yes.
But are colombo and jaffna producing the brightest and best??
Compared to outstations the density of schools in Jaffna is higher than even Colombo. Then the facilities like teachers and labs etc are much more.
Thats why I said that the Govt took the first step of affirmative action but not the follow up to equalise the standards of education so that there would be a level playing field for all (after say 10 years). They've forgotten all about the principle I would say. |

Pacha, Pera and Rasak
This debate is interesting since it began right at the time Moratuwa got Uni status back in the 60's.
Regards overall rounding off as a person I think that you cannot beat Peradeniya.
However regards engineering I think that perhaps Prof EOE Pereira did not foresee that moving the faculty to Peradeniya would move it also away from industry. Given the poor pay conditions, travel conditions etc in Sri Lanka, Peradeniya has lost out to Moratuwa as regards interaction and contribution to/with the industry and to the profession |

Pee Puli,
I think your report should be other way round. Instead of telling many STF and SLA dies..... you have to tell many LTTE members r rest in peace and Tamilnet is silent about it......R you saying that we have to believe many SLA dies and but Tamil nut and Rasaiya Illan r silent about that?? lol......wake up ....the squeezing brain between your chair and body......hi hi hi.....tell something which is close to reality.......lol |

Sri Lanka, in the second half of the 20th century, experienced a steep social deterioration whose exact causes are difficult to specify. What began as ethnic tension between the Sinhalese majority in the south and the Tamil minority in the north became bloody slaughter.
The substantial preferences given to the Sinhalese (awarded, as in Malaysia, to protect a less competent majority) certainly played a role in exacerbating these tensions. ...
The once-tranquil island was afflicted with widespread pillage, murder, rape. Deliberately exacerbating racial tensions for the sake of political gain-we learn from the case of Sri Lanka-promotes hatred of a kind and of a degree almost impossible to reverse. What begins with race preference ends with race riots.
There we go...
No wonder some people are shouting here in favor of quota system... because they also benefitted from these racial policies of Sirima...!

Thank you
But are colombo and jaffna producing the brightest and best?? Not sure about it anymore ..I am sure Jaffna does not anymore but Colombo should be in the TOP! Unfortunetly in Colombo i suppose kids are sent to International schools and from there they move abroad to university..
Compared to outstations the density of schools in Jaffna is higher than even Colombo. Then the facilities like teachers and labs etc are much more
UR right..but should that be taken into account when you choose the brightest of the brightest to enter University..
Galle..from your name i think your from galle..(pardon me if your not) and if your indeed from Galle from your comments i feel your already feeling discriminated by the so called Jaffna/Colombo students..am I right?..(take the Ethnic cap out)..well I won't blame u..If facilities are the main issue then I agree but we can't put a benchmark in saying a 'A' in Colombo is equal to a 'B' in Galle..can we?

explained that there was an ethnic problem in the country and that there should be a solution to it.
There are, but not for the war hungers, as long as there are people who want to continue check their ability to fight with government forces, this conflict will continue and won't stop.
One and only way out of this conflict now is to war this out and get a clean winner.
