For EG:- they may allow say 50 students from Jaffna and say 25 from say Galle...
the best 50 from all of jaffna and the best 25 from Galle can enter..here is the problem..u may not enter from jaffna sometimes with 2A's and 2C's cos you have 50 better students but you may find someone from galle who will enter with 2B's and 2C's cos he was in the top 25 from Galle..
u have basic flow in your argument...
the problem is not only confined to tamils in jafna its a problam for all races
and matter of fact matara which has the higest marks for eng and medical is affected far worse than jafna!!! |

It depends on how you look at it..for me whether the students are Tamils or Sinhalese or Muslims the best should enter university based on the results..This system was what the PM felt will give Sinhalese students More chance to enter the unis..it depends on the real objective malli..
As you may agree with me the Rich people and the politicians made use of the same system to get their kids into universities..u know how? they got their kids to study in best schools in Colombo but registered them in a small village outside Colombo so that the results they got was good enough to enter universities..They used the weakness in the system or you may say manipulated it..
Malli..for Tamils it was like discriminating them from entering but may be for a Sinhalese it was a fair system cos they got a chance to enter good unis..U can argue both ways..
We know in SL systems are not always the best (it was not possible to satisfy both parties) but we live with it or around it.. |

We are back again - discussing the proportional system of entry into the Universities.
I remember at that time I opposed it, basically because it made getting into Uni from Colombo was made that much more difficult.
That's before realising that it was affirmative action - just like was being practiced in USA until recently and is presently practiced in India eg recognition as a disadvantaged tribe.
Looking back, generally it was a good thing because it opened doors for the rural folk. However follow up action such as developing the standards of rural schools have not been followed up. |
