Zero abduction in Sri Lanka: Is it possible? Saturday, 30 June 2007 - 5:10 AM SL Time Zero abduction in Sri Lanka: Is it possible? Introduction Sri Lanka has been witnessing gross violations of human rights committed by both the government and other groups from late 2005 and since the resumption of the war between the armed forces and the LTTE, it has recorded an exponential rise. This has received much international condemnation, especially from the UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions- Professor Philip Alston, the Co-Chairs of the peace process and the SLMM. The International Crisis Group, the Human Rights Committee, the Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and other human rights bodies have also universally condemned the continued abductions and extrajudicial killings. Whilst all these reports condemn the violations committed by the LTTE, severe strictures have been tabled against the Government of Sri Lanka. If this trend continues, there will be serious consequences for Sri Lanka internationally. Some of the consequences are as follows.

Sri Lanka hopeful Norway meeting will help peace process Friday, 29 June 2007 - 7:09 AM SL Time Sri Lanka`s Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said Thursday he was optimistic that a meeting of top donors this week would help to revive the island nation`s moribund peace process. Peace broker Norway is holding the crucial meeting of Sri Lanka`s top aid donors in a bid to halt a new wave of bloodshed. `We are expecting a very favourable development. The outcome is expected to encourage the current peace process toward contributing to the sustainability of our country,` said Bogollagma. Oslo-brokered peace talks collapsed in October last year and since then diplomatic efforts have failed to end violence in the bitter ethnic conflict which has claimed more than 60,000 lives in the past 35 years.

UN: Govt. blocking fuel supplies to its Wanni offices Sunday, 1 July 2007 - 6:05 AM SL Time The United Nations is accusing the Sri Lankan government of starving its humanitarian agencies of much-needed fuel to operate vehicles and also generators which power freezers storing life-saving vaccines and other medicines. The continued power shortages, caused by lack of fuel, will soon affect the preservation of vaccines and essential medicines, the UN warned in a letter to Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa. The UN, which is engaged in the humanitarian task of providing relief supplies to refugees caught in the crossfire in the north-east, says its operational activities are expected to come to a complete standstill unless there is urgent action. In the letter to Mr. Rajapaksa, the UN`s Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Frederick Lyons says that since March `none of the UN offices in the Wanni has received their fuel allocation, despite the written approval received from the Commissioner General for Essential Services (CGES) for April, May and now June.`

Buffeted by the chill wind of political trouble Friday, 29 June 2007 - 7:13 AM SL Time The JVP has ruled out the possibility of any alliance with the UNP as a partner thus dashing the SLFP dissidents` hopes of turning the tables on President Mahinda Rajapakse in Parliament by forming a rainbow coalition. Only the politically naïve may have expected such an alliance to come into being. The JVP and the UNP can never get together except for a limited purpose like a move to defeat a bill e.g. the torpedoing of President Kumaratunga`s Regional Councils Bill in 2000 and the abortive attempt to shoot down the recent supplementary estimates. In real politics, the chances of their interests converging are as distant as cohabitation between a cobra and a mongoose. That was why in 2001, when the UNP launched its Janabala Meheyuma (which helped dislodge the Kumaratunga government a few months later), the JVP put off some of its protests, as it didn`t want to create a situation where the UNP would stand to gain.

Right of reply the wrong way Thursday, 28 June 2007 - 7:51 AM SL Time Politicians and their lackeys are well known for putting their VIP feet in their big mouths. Some of them try to enhance their performance by putting both feet in their orifices simultaneously. But, the problem with pulling that stunt is that they are left with no foot to stand on. They land on their derriere with a thud. What a pity! Here is an example. One Mr. Daya Weerasinghe, who describes himself as Media Secretary-Min. of Foreign Affairs has, in a letter to the Daily Mirror Editor, accused this newspaper of having denied the Foreign Ministry of its right of reply presumably as regards our news item, Bogollagama`s security abuse Sethu Project advisors (June 12) and editorial comment, Don`t disturb Kadir in his sleep (June 13). We quote the relevant section of his letter:

Nobody`s children in nobody`s schools Wednesday, 27 June 2007 - 10:20 AM SL Time There seems to be no end to depressing reports on the education sector. Hot on the heels of the alarming failure rate at the GCE (O/L) examination comes the news that the number of students in underprivileged schools is dwindling. Many of those schools have already been closed and some more are earmarked for closure. Yesterday, we reported that according to a survey conducted by the Education Ministry over fifty per cent of schools had fewer than 200 students each. Out of the existing 9,714 schools, 4,907 have been affected by the dearth of students. What we see are the early signs of closure. This problem stems from an assortment of factors such as prolonged neglect, the attendant scarcity of resources and rapid urbanisation, which has exerted a tremendous pull on the rural backwaters. The expansion of public transport has enabled the conveyance of the rural children who prefer schools in the urban and semi urban areas. When more and more of them vote with their feet, only the children of the marginalized sections of society become dependent on the poorly equipped small schools that are in trouble. (In some urban areas, too, a similar situation prevails.)

Punishing Peterites inflict right Royal routing Saturday, 30 June 2007 - 5:06 AM SL Time St. Peter`s ruggerites proved that they are the most superior rugby team in the schools today when they completely routed Royal by 41 points (3 goals, 4 tries) to nothing in their inter-schools rugby encounter at Bambalapitiya yesterday. With this win the Peterites created history to register their biggest margin of win in their annual encounter against Royal. Their last biggest win was 24-nil in 1985 and yesterday was their happiest day as they also took hold of the Lim Billimoria memorial trophy. St. Peter`s made Royal look like novices that easily made their victory of the Bradby Shield as worthless and nothing to boast about. The game began with Royal occupying the Peterite territory in the first ten minutes of the game but they could not make use of it to score any points.

Sri Lanka heap umiliation Friday, 29 June 2007 - 7:12 AM SL Time Spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan with a matchbag of nine wickets guided Sri Lanka to a rousing innings and 234 run victory over Bangladesh in the first test match concluded at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground in Maitland Place yesterday. The manner in which the Lankans completed their task was really outstanding with the match ending just half an hour into the fourth day`s play and it was also their biggest victory over Bangladesh. Their previous biggest victory was recorded in 2002 at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium where they triumphed by an innings and 196 runs. This also marked Sri Lanka`s eighth successive victory against Bangladesh with five of them by an innings. In fact Sri Lanka`s dominance against the test minnows have been so much in the past that they have never required a fifth day to seal victory. Four of the test matches have ended inside three days and the remaining three games have ended with a day to spare.
