Claymore mine brought to Colombo in Govt. vehicle
Wednesday, 27 June 2007 - 10:12 AM SL Time

A powerful claymore mine, weighing 20 kilos, was found by the Borella Police yesterday in Skanda Devale Road, Obeysekerapura. Preliminary investigations revealed that the mine had been transported from Vavuniya in a government vehicle. Police believe it was kept buried to be used in the future on a VIP travelling to Parliament.

The mine was brought on Monday in a vehicle belonging to the Kilinochchi Local Government Department. The cab was seen parked at Gothami Road. Some people had seen the diesel tank of the vehicle being removed and after some time another diesel tank being fitted. They tipped off the Police.

When the Police arrived at the scene, three youth were fitting the diesel tank. At first they denied any knowledge of illegal activity. They had insisted that they were on an official mission to Colombo.

Sri Lanka bombs rebels, foreign donors urge peace
Wednesday, 27 June 2007 - 3:56 AM SL Time
COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lankan warplanes bombed Tamil Tiger targets in the island`s north and east on Tuesday but there were no immediate reports of any casualties.

In Oslo, Sri Lanka`s main foreign donors -- the United States, the European Union, Japan and Norway -- said they were deeply concerned about the conflict.

`(We) will keep pushing forward towards a resumption of the peace process,` Tomas Stangeland, a spokesman for Norway`s Foreign Ministry, said after a meeting between the donors.

The warplanes bombed a suspected rebel sea base in the northwestern Mannar district and also targeted jungle mortar positions in the eastern Batticaloa district, the military said.

Only CFA can save Sri Lanka - Thamilchelvan
Tuesday, 26 June 2007 - 7:27 AM SL Time
Thamilchelvan: We welcome the Co-chairs meeting to discuss issues relating to permanent peace and resolution to the ethnic conflict. The International community has reiterated the futility of the military option and the need for the two sides to return to the negotiating table. While welcoming this, we point out that the Tamil people are deeply saddened that the international community has not taken any constructive and concrete measures to end the State-sponsored violence against the Tamil people. In particular, nothing has been done to bring an end to the ethnic cleansing, horrendous human rights violations, and the grave human misery that the Tamil people have been subjected to. Indeed suspicions have arisen among the Tamil people as to why there is no firm united stance even among the Co-chairs. The Tamil people are puzzled as to why some countries are indirectly encouraging the Government by giving military and economic aid while some other countries are pressuring the Government to seek a political solution.

Think of country`s well-being - Asgiriya, Malwatte Prelates tell Mangala, Sripathi:
Monday, 25 June 2007 - 12:32 PM SL Time
The Prelates of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters have admonished both ex Ministers Mangala Samaraweera and Sripathi Suriarachchi to return to the Government fold,at a critical time the country was facing, if they have any concern and care for the well-being of the country.

If there were issues with conflicting interest, those could be resolved through dialogue.

It is incorrect and improper to deviate from the path of discussion as that gives rise to further issues, the Maha Nayaka Theras of the two Chapters have pointed out to the two former Ministers when they made a courtesy call to the two Most Venerable Monks in Kandy.

The two former Ministers held discussions with the Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddartha Sumangala Maha Nayaka Thera of the Malwatta Chapter and Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha, Maha Nayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter and Most Ven. Galagama Sri Aththadassi, the Anunayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter.

Rajagiriya bomb: Minister points finger at lodgers
Thursday, 28 June 2007 - 7:51 AM SL Time
The Government said yesterday that the main suspects allegedly involved in the Rajagiriya claymore incident were Tamil lodgers who had come to Colombo for various jobs like brick- laying.

Government Defence Spokesman and Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told a news conference yesterday that eight suspects had been arrested in connection with the discovery of a claymore bomb weighing 20 kilos which had been smuggled into Colombo to cause a massive disaster.

Mr. Rambukwella said the two main suspects had, however, been in Colombo as lodgers to work out their plan.

`If police caught them ten minutes before the recovery of the explosives,

everyone would have taken them as innocent persons doing odd jobs in Colombo,` he said.

Sri Lanka warn of `tragic error` in Western aid cut
Wednesday, 27 June 2007 - 10:22 AM SL Time
Sri Lanka told Western donor nations Tuesday that it would be a `tragic error` to cut aid to the island nation due to alleged human rights abuses linked to a longstanding ethnic conflict.

Britain, Germany and the Netherlands have already slashed various forms of aid to Colombo due to human rights abuses and other reasons linked to the conflict with Tamil Tiger rebels and several other nations could follow suit.

The United States also has refused to include Sri Lanka in its so-called Millennium Challenge Account, under which it could receive millions of dollars in aid for building critical infrastructure.

`It would be a tragic error to withhold pecuniary resources from Sri Lanka because that will create conditions in which extremism and terrorism would thrive,` the island`s international trade minister, G.L. Peiris, told AFP in an interview in Washington.

Presenting the proposals, Mr. Samaraweera told journalists yesterday that this statement should not be considered as an election manifesto. He said they would present this set of proposals to other political parties, civil society organizations and even individuals for a broad discussion before drafting the final.

LTTE totally responsible for the lives of 70,000 Tamils` - TULF Leader
Wednesday, 27 June 2007 - 10:25 AM SL Time
In a open letter, V.Anandasangaree, the Leader of Tamil United Liberation Front has alleged the V.Prabakaran, the reclusive leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, should be held responsible for the deaths of over 70 thousand people of all faiths, of all age groups, of both sexes of all communities in Sri Lanka not only at the battle front but also in land and claymore mine attacks, hand grenade and bomb attacks and also massacres of innocent ones in buses, and trains.

In a scathing attack Anandasangaree has pointed out `One of your most cruel actions was the assassination of the Ex-Prime Minister of India the Late Hon. Rajiv Gandhi with which you lost the support of all Indians. Those who still support you in India are only pretenders. The next thoughtless step was your decision to eradicate all the other Tamil groups without realizing that rightly or wrongly they came forward to fight for a cause like you and your cadre.`

Asian economies warned against complacency
Tuesday, 26 June 2007 - 7:35 AM SL Time
Asian economies may have overcome the 1997?98 financial crisis but now face new threats such as income disparity, climate change and a possible global economic meltdown, government and business leaders said Sunday.

`A shock will come at some point,` Singapore Second Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam warned attendees at the World Economic Forum on East Asia.

`I think emerging markets have to brace themselves to put into place shock absorbers to deal with this sort of event ... it requires astute management,` he said.

Asia`s government and corporate sectors must join hands to develop policies and new leadership to tackle these new pressing global challenges to ensure sustainable growth in the region, delegates told the World Economic Forum on East Asia.

Right of reply the wrong way
Thursday, 28 June 2007 - 7:51 AM SL Time
Politicians and their lackeys are well known for putting their VIP feet in their big mouths. Some of them try to enhance their performance by putting both feet in their orifices simultaneously. But, the problem with pulling that stunt is that they are left with no foot to stand on. They land on their derriere with a thud. What a pity! Here is an example.

One Mr. Daya Weerasinghe, who describes himself as Media Secretary-Min. of Foreign Affairs has, in a letter to the Daily Mirror Editor, accused this newspaper of having denied the Foreign Ministry of its right of reply presumably as regards our news item, Bogollagama`s security abuse Sethu Project advisors (June 12) and editorial comment, Don`t disturb Kadir in his sleep (June 13). We quote the relevant section of his letter:

Nobody`s children in nobody`s schools
Wednesday, 27 June 2007 - 10:20 AM SL Time

There seems to be no end to depressing reports on the education sector. Hot on the heels of the alarming failure rate at the GCE (O/L) examination comes the news that the number of students in underprivileged schools is dwindling. Many of those schools have already been closed and some more are earmarked for closure. Yesterday, we reported that according to a survey conducted by the Education Ministry over fifty per cent of schools had fewer than 200 students each.

Out of the existing 9,714 schools, 4,907 have been affected by the dearth of students. What we see are the early signs of closure.

This problem stems from an assortment of factors such as prolonged neglect, the attendant scarcity of resources and rapid urbanisation, which has exerted a tremendous pull on the rural backwaters. The expansion of public transport has enabled the conveyance of the rural children who prefer schools in the urban and semi urban areas. When more and more of them vote with their feet, only the children of the marginalized sections of society become dependent on the poorly equipped small schools that are in trouble. (In some urban areas, too, a similar situation prevails.)

What`s up the SLMM`s sleeve?
Tuesday, 26 June 2007 - 7:36 AM SL Time
What is being flaunted as Sri Lanka`s peace process is like a papaya on a wayside stall?raw but richly yellow thanks to exposure to calcium carbide, a treatment for which Sri Lankan fruit vendors could obtain a patent. It may come in handy for display purposes but is of no use to anyone. Even the Norwegians who masterminded the peace effort appear to be tired of trying to market it. The SLMM is reported to have stopped ruling on truce violations, citing some reasons such as the escalation of violence and lack of personnel.

A peace process is contingent upon three factors?a truce, a process to evolve a negotiated settlement and an effective monitoring mechanism. A truce is, to begin with, conspicuous by its absence in this country. As for finding a solution, successive governments have been flying with one wing, urged by the world powers. The monitoring mechanism, too, has collapsed. So, if anyone thinks there is a peace process in this country, he or she is only cherishing a delusion.

Wednesday, 27 June 2007 - 10:20 AM SL Time

The hosts took tea at 459 for six and had a first innings lead of 370 with four wickets remaining.

The batsmen who got set made the most against the hapless Bangladeshi attack that struggled to trouble the hosts.

Vandort was the first to get to three figures and he did it in a hurry in the very first over he faced in the morning.

The left-hander, who resumed at his overnight score of 87 hoisted the second ball of Mashrafe Morataza for a six then pulled the fourth ball for another six before working the ball for a couple to complete his third Test hundred.
